Should they be uninvited if child is ill?

A group of us have arranged to meet up on Saturday to do an outside Easter activity trail. Suggested by one friend who has a 5 year old and a toddler. Everyone else has babies under 18 months (apart from me, I don’t have any kids).

The 5 year old was sick today but we are hoping it’s a 24 hour bug and he’ll be better soon. Parent of 5 year old said if he’s better by Saturday they’ll still come as he’s looking forward to it. One couple with a baby (4 months old) have said they don’t feel comfortable coming and exposing their baby to the sick bug. Parents of 5 year old have said okay then they won’t come (they’re very non confrontational).

Nobody else has a problem with 5 year old and family coming. It’s outside and it was plans suggested by them and for the 5 year old.

Im not sure what to do in this situation, should the family with the baby be the ones to not attend as they’re worried? Or is it a reasonable concern for their baby and if your child has been ill recently it’s common courtesy to stay home?

Obviously if 5 year old is still being sick they won’t be coming, only if they feel better.

I think the problem is the ambiguity of 'if better by Saturday '. It could mean they intend to stick to the 48hr rule, or if she stops being sick on friday, they'll still come. The former is fine, the latter is not.

I think they should stay away. Norovirus / rotavirus is contagious for 2 wks. Yes schools let kids come back after 48 hrs but that’s why diseases go round and round schools and is so that parents can hold down jobs. It isn’t because they’re definitely no longer contagious, most kids who’ve vomited are still contagious a few days later.

My child has had norovirus a few times (and also given it to me obvs) and every time he caught it off someone whose parent insisted that their child wasn’t contagious anymore. On one occasion both of us vomited every 15 minutes for about 12 hrs. You know how many towels and sheets we got through? All of them. Could have all been avoided if the mum of the sick kid hadn’t insisted on coming to our meetup.

So those “He feels much better now and probably isn’t contagious” parents can fuck right off imo.

If I were the parents of the 5YO I'd stop oversharing about their child's illnesses. Then just make THEIR judgement when the day comes without other people sticking their noses in and flashing their opinions about.

Clearly the 4mo is a first child. If they’re feeling that worried they should sit out. What are they going to do once their PFB hits toddlerhood and starts licking floors/dirty toys/other children?

If they're anything like my DD, the parents won't even have to wait until toddlerhood. 11 month old was licking the sole of my slipper today 😳🤢

JMSA · 05/04/2023 23:03

Baby couple should stay away. Realistically, what's a 4 month old going to get out of an Easter egg hunt anyway? Confused

Hankunamatata · 05/04/2023 23:10

If just sick today then totally fine for Wednesday. I do remember dc1 at baby group crawling across the school hall floor licking it as he went

LuvSmallDogs · 05/04/2023 23:21

If the parents of the 4 m/o are that precious, I don't know how they can bear to leave the house with them!🤣

I've also never heard of people applying the 48 hr rule to anything other than school or working with food.

Mwnci123 · 05/04/2023 23:26

Baby couple being very PFB about it.

Timetosayno · 05/04/2023 23:30

The 4 month old family should stay away if they are so concerned. What's a 4 month old baby going to do at an easter activity?? It's a shame the 5 year old should have to miss out

Skyeheather · 05/04/2023 23:32

I would suggest that the parents of the four month old wear their baby in a sling that way there shouldn't be any contact with the five year old.

Or the parents of the four month old give it a miss they are being very OTT though if it's all going to be outdoors, do they not know how many germs/sick people there are in supermarkets, restaurants, basically anywhere indoors that they take their baby? They need to stay at home and never come out! Just wait until their baby can move!

Since you don't have kids, you'd be the perfect person to stand up for your friend I think. Please do so. '5 year old will no longer be contagious if it's been 48 hours since illness, and even if it had been less time the risk is very low outdoors. Could you pop 4 month old in a sling if you are worried?'

adultdds · 05/04/2023 23:50

If 5 year old is clear 48 hours they should go. Parents of 4m old can do as they wish.

Drummend01 · 06/04/2023 16:05

Thanks for the replies everyone, I message the group and said ‘I think if 5 year old hasn’t been sick since this morning then it’s 48 hours from when we all meet up it should be fine. With the amount of kids we have in this group, if we asked people to quarantine as soon as anyone is ill we’d never get to meet up. Ultimately not up to me but thought I’d add my two cents, I’d love for everyone to be there’

The 5 year olds family replied saying he had a good night and is feeling better but they don’t want anyone to have to worry about their own children so they’re happy to miss out. They’ve got an Easter egg hunt on Sunday with their family so 5 year old will still have a good Easter.

others replied wishing the 5 year old a speedy recovery and a catch you next time sort of thing

parents of 4 month old hearted the message from 5 year olds family but didn’t reply 🤷🏼‍♀️

Bless the 5yr parents

But

No need for him to miss out if hasn't been sick again

WimpoleHat · 06/04/2023 17:19

With the amount of kids we have in this group, if we asked people to quarantine as soon as anyone is ill we’d never get to meet up.

Absolutely! The 4 month old parents are being a bit ridiculous; at any activity with lots of kids around there will also be lots of germs. You just won’t know where/who! If 5 year old is getting better, he will be absolutely fine by Saturday.
