DH not getting cost of living payment.

DH’s company decided to give all staff a cost of living payment in April’s pay package.

He starts a new job next week, and has just been told he won’t get it, despite being still on April payroll.

AIBU to think he should have been included? He’s never had any kind of extra payment or bonus despite working there a long time with no pay rises.

YABU - no he shouldn’t get it
YANBU - he should get it

Clauses that bonuses won’t be paid to those working notice is pretty normal so YABU, but it’s a bummer

namechange0102 · 05/04/2023 19:33

YABU he's leaving, no longer an employee

Inthesamesinkingboat · 05/04/2023 19:34

Normally these things are to make things a little easier for staff going forwards without having to commit to a pay rise, and to stave people off from looking elsewhere for work. He has already decided to go elsewhere so as a business it doesn’t help retain him.

lsanny · 05/04/2023 19:35

No of course he shouldn't get it. They are giving it to their employees to help them. He is leaving, they have no interest in helping him. Unfortunate timing.

Albiboba · 05/04/2023 19:37

No, it’s already almost a week into April and he doesn’t even work there yet.
Really weird to have expected it imo

Doyouthinktheyknow · 05/04/2023 19:38

Fairly standard. Dh delayed his retirement to ensure he got his yearly bonus before handing in his notice🤷‍♀️

He earned it having worked the full year but if he had handed in his notice before receiving it, he wouldn’t have got it.

I think she means his current company, but it's discretionary and they're choosing not to give it to him because they don't need to support his living costs as he's leaving - so his well-being is no longer their responsibility.

Still just as weird. He will have had a handful of days working for the company in April.
If he’s leaving why would they give him a bonus?

DanceMonster · 05/04/2023 19:45

It’s normal to not pay bonuses to people who have handed their notice in at the time it’s paid.

midnightblue12 · 05/04/2023 20:05

My employer gave a one off payment in the autumn and one of the clauses was that if you were to leave on 3 months you had to repay.

It seems pretty reasonable to me that your partner doesn't get it 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sunnyfunnytimes · 05/04/2023 20:06

Generally if you’re leaving they don’t give you a bonus. Sorry op

ComtesseDeSpair · 05/04/2023 20:08

Standard clause. Conversely, I got a CoL bonus from my previous employer who I left on 3 April last year, because being employed on 1 April was the date for eligibility. I was massively surprised!

Mycathatesmecuddling · 05/04/2023 20:09

The whole point of a bonus like that is to try to stop employees leaving for better paid jobs through increasing company loyalty and employee engagement

From a purely pragmatic point of view your DH is already leaving the company so this gesture would be wasted on him and therefore a waste of company money

Capitalism and altruism can go hand in hand but it's not common

NoSquirrels · 05/04/2023 20:10

Standard for bonuses not to be paid to staff who have handed in their notice. Sorry.

chellogo · 05/04/2023 20:13

I work in payroll and no we wouldn't pay this type of payment to anyone working their notice period

Fair enough, I’ve never worked anywhere that has done any bonuses. I think the most frustrating thing is they decided to do this and announced it back in November. There’s been a huge turnover of staff and at the moment it looks like only the directors are actually getting this cost of living payment, which just seems so wrong as they are well renumerated.
