Am I being underpaid at work

Safarigiraffe · 05/04/2023 19:00

I work 35-38 hours a week full time, new salary pay rise has come out it says my new pay is 21,809 per annum from 20,420 however looking on my salary online it says 24,924 (21,809 prorated) so as I work full time 35-38 hours a week shouldn’t I be getting 24,924 & not be prorated? Hope it all makes sense

It doesn't make sense sorry. Do you work 35 or 38 hours per week? I work FT and do 37. 5 hours.

Safarigiraffe · 05/04/2023 19:03

Hi sorry I work 35 hours a week but sometimes do extra 3 hours a week overtime which would take it to 38 hours

Exactly how many hours is full time? And how do you work 35-38?!

GCWorkNightmare · 05/04/2023 19:03

From those sums full time is 40 hours and you’re prorated to 35.

Sunnyfunnytimes · 05/04/2023 19:04

is The 35 inc breaks?

Albiboba · 05/04/2023 19:04

What do you mean ‘looking online’ it tells you your salary is higher? Looking where?

FawnFrenchieMum · 05/04/2023 19:04

Sounds like full time is 39 hours and you’re being paid for 35 (roughly).

I think she’s saying if she worked 40 she’d be paid the higher sum and she wants that.

PickledPurplePickle · 05/04/2023 19:05

You are being paid for 35 hours based on a 40 hour a week full time salary

what does your contract say about overtime, is it paid?

FawnFrenchieMum · 05/04/2023 19:05

Sorry 40 hours is full time, and your being paid for 35.

Welshrainbow · 05/04/2023 19:07

Their full time is based on 49 hours and they are paying you for 35. If they are clear that full time is equivalent to 49 hours then it seems fine to me. Do you get paid hourly for the overtime? If not then possibly stop or ask to increase your hours permanently to receive the salary increase.

Iliketeaagain · 05/04/2023 19:07

If your contracted for 35 hours then that's what your salary will be (pro-rated to whatever full time is).

You would / should get paid for the extra hours above that when you work them - if you're not, then either stop working over or ask to be paid for the extra hours and it would / should show on your payslip separately. But salary will relate to what you are contracted to rather than including extra hours which you work some weeks.

49?! It’s 40.

As 21809 is clearly 35/40 of 24924 the only issue appears to be whether you should be paid for the extra 3 hours

What does your contact say?

Safarigiraffe · 05/04/2023 19:18

The extra 3 hours I do I get paid as overtime

Sorry there's just not enough information here. In simple terms (at your level) you should get paid for what you work provided you've been asked to work. What does your contract say? If it's 35hrs but sometimes you do a few hours extra then you get paid your pro rata salary plus your overtime, however your overtime needs to be 'approved' some how. It might even be that you accrue time off in lieu instead of payment. I'll assume you've been there a while and have been paid for your extra work.
Your contract and your pro rata salary with show your 'basic' salary/hrs so if a fulltime worker is 40hrs and you are contracted for 35hrs your pro rata salary with now be (35÷40) x £24924 which is about £21809....so assuming fulltime is 40hrs, that's correct. You'll still get paid for extra hours though assuming you follow procedure.
Why do you feel you should get the full time salary when you don't work full time? Even on your best weeks you're essentially knocking off half hour earlier than the full timers (40hrs)

Safarigiraffe · 05/04/2023 19:20

My hours are 9-530
Overtime hours are 8-530

Ignore the overtime. That's confused matters.

Your working hours are 35. It suggests that that is not considered full time for whatever it is. Full time would get you £24,924

Newmum0322 · 05/04/2023 19:34

You work 35 hours (9-5:30) as standard @ £21,809

Full time is 40 hours (8-5:30) @ 24,924

£24,924 - £21,809 = £3,115

£3,115 is equivalent to 5 hours work in a 40 hour contract!

You then work 3 hours overtime which presumable is paid in addition to your base ‘pro rated’ salary!
