To find this bad?

That all nursery nurses who are qualified after 2016 need to have a valid first aid certificate but those who qualified before then do not? There is one lady I know who is highly qualified but doesn't have first aid because of health reasons (She's older and has osteoarthritis) which would make the course difficult. Yet she is still included in ratios....

If you can't physically perform basic first aid how on earth can you physically run around after a bunch of toddlers and keep them safe, that's really bad!

TinaTeaspoons · 05/04/2023 16:16

Not all practitioners need to be first aid qualified. Unless they did their qualification after 2014 which means that first aid is a requirement in order to pass.
It's good practice for all to be first aid trained, but it's not the case that they should all be. Some like the lady you mention would be exempt.
You say this woman has a high qualification level so must also be experienced. She also won't be lone working.

I can't see how it's much different to primary teachers being responsible for 30 children with no first aid training 🤔

L3ThirtySeven · 05/04/2023 16:19

Surely that’s an accommodation due to her disability? it’s not a requirement for everyone to have first aid.

So long as some staff in the vicinity have first aid I fail to see why every single practitioner needs it. Surely if a child needed first aid a colleague would do it. As for being able to run around, again, not everyone needs to be physically running around in a team of staff. The best nursery worker my kids had was well over 60, couldn’t run anywhere, struggled to get off the floor - but was patient, kind, thoughtful and extremely well qualified. She was absolutely awesome with an upset or nervous child and the kids with SEN in particular adored her. The idea she couldn’t keep the children safe is laughable.

How many parents do you suppose have first aid qualifications? How many grandparents doing childminding this Easter holiday do you suppose are first aid qualified?

I suppose my view is skewed somewhat because my daughter is high needs sen and having anyone without basic first aid could literally kill her she's on feeding tubes, severe allergies and complex needs issues I just assumed all nursery workers had to have first aid, and teachers for that matter but my daughter is at special needs school now so they do I'd of thought even mainstream did due to the kiddos with deadly allergies. I was a disability support worker previously and we all had to have first aid too really is a case of living in two seperate worlds I guess xx

With someone with complex needs though basic first aid training generally won’t be enough. In Ds case staff at his mainstream school have had specific training in his tube and his medical conditions as they are above the level of any standard first aid course

thegrain · 05/04/2023 17:08

First aid courses don't cover feeding tubes as a basic level

teachers are not medically qualified, and have no medical responsibilities

Sprinkles21 · 05/04/2023 17:23

Yes I see that now , this is what I mean by two separate worlds disability vs mainstream xx
