What did your DC get for their 18th from you and the wider family? And did you think it was appropriate?

We've the oldest grand child on both sides about to turn 18. She's getting a laptop from us, her parents. Useful but not an heirloom.
What do Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents give these days?
Back in the 90s I got a Roberts Radio and an empty but pretty perfume bottle from Selfridges!
My work colleague gifted her kids £42,000 each. It felt a lot for an 18year old to handle, it was literally a cheque.
What's normal in your world?

My boys had a long weekend in Prague and my daughter a trip to see green day with an overnight hotel

Merryoldgoat · 04/04/2023 23:48

Nothing from my mum (no money) and some money from various family members.

MrsMiddleMother · 05/04/2023 00:02

I got a load of shit from card factory with 18 on it.. glass, mug, key etc and I bought myself my provisional license so I could go clubbing

Sgtmajormummy · 05/04/2023 00:11

A digital reflex camera, driving lessons and €500.
Being 18 meant they could legally buy a house, so 9 days later they signed the papers on what became their student accommodation.

DS got a MacBook from us and custom designed silver cufflinks from other family for his 18th. DD got a new iPhone and tickets/hotel to see Taylor Swift for hers from us (subsequently cancelled due to COVID) and a custom designed silver ring from other family. They both got £500 cash from us for their 21st and extra cash from other family. We paid for a family meal for both 18th's and took DD out for lunch on her 21st (lockdown meant this wasn't possible for DS). Neither wanted parties.

Mine each got a holiday of their choice for their 18th.

trebarwith1 · 05/04/2023 00:33

My mum was always broke but she got me a gorgeous piece of art for my 18th. It felt really random at the time but now hangs up pride of place in my front room and I love it so much. I'm terrible at losing jewellery so this has been great!

a new car from my grandmother. It was honda jazz.

Dintananadinta · 05/04/2023 03:21

I can't remember what my parents gave me for my 18th. They couldnt have got me anything significant as I would've remembered . However, I remember what the card looked like! My aunt gave me some jewellery in my birthstone which was very unexpected. She is terrible with gifts and doesn't like spending money so I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't have grandparents at 18.

Phoebo · 05/04/2023 03:32

Mostly (fairly in expensive -£50ish) jewellery for my neices recent birthday

icanneverthinkofnc · 05/04/2023 06:11

In 1984, I turned 18, and I got a childs duvet cover and an engraved wine goblet. Confused
My teens got £100 or the offer of a small block of driving lessons, boys took cash, DD the lessons, it's all we could afford.

FangsForTheMemory · 05/04/2023 06:25

A radio/cassette player from my parents, and from other relatives, money to get my ears pierced and a gold ring. No party.

SertralineAndTherapy · 05/04/2023 06:30

My DD got control of her Junior ISA! She then withdrew a few hundred pounds for a pre-university shopping-spree, and the rest is gradually being moved over to a LISA every tax year.

Sairk · 05/04/2023 06:49

DSD got a new iPhone (1k) plus jewellery.

DustyLee123 · 05/04/2023 06:50

A second hand car from us, and £100 cash from one of their aunts. Nothing from the rest.

Aria2015 · 05/04/2023 10:24

I have a niece / nephew and have given £50 each for 18th and 21st plus a bottle of champagne / box of beers to celebrate with.

My own 18th (over 20 years ago) went with little or no fanfare. We made a bit more of a fuss for 21 and I did get a cheap banger car for my 17th so can't complain!

Not sure what I'll do for my own kids. Depends on what they want (within reason!!).

Maray1967 · 05/04/2023 10:26
