I visited once. Can't say I'm dying for a return visit.

Fair enough. I've always thought it looks deprived

I live in Kent but not near Folkestone.

Went for a day trip once. Never again.

It doesn't have a great reputation, shall we say.

StandUpForYourRights · 04/04/2023 16:38

Like anywhere, some parts are lovely, some parts not so. House prices usually tell you which is which.

Annietheacrobat · 04/04/2023 16:39

It's coming up. The harbour area has been redeveloped - I would consider it

DoubleHelix79 · 04/04/2023 16:44

Not familiar with that area in terms of housing but Folkestone has changed massively in the last few years. The area towards the lighthouse now has loads of pop up food stalls, bars and cafes and it looks like they may be setting up lots of independent craft stalls. We often go for day trips with the children. I like Folkestone.
That said, there is a lot of obvious deprivation.
Sorry, not sure that was very helpful.

Yes thanks - was helpful - lot of deprivation there I saw as well in the early 2000s

I lived in Folkestone and hawkinge for most of my life, now in Ashford. Folkestone is a quaint place, lots of places to eat and some lovely walks but not a huge amount to do for kids, the shops are a little crap and no cinema, bowling etc. The harbour area used to be quite rough but the club shut down years ago so I'm not sure what that area is like now. I'd say if you're looking at housing then look a little further out of town, there are much nicer roads. I personally wouldn't love in the town centre. Being in town does attract youths but honestly I haven't heard any worse antisocial behaviour than any other town! Like a PP said, house prices will say a lot about specific areas.

I lived in Hythe near Folkestone for 2 years and only moved due to work, I love it down there - Its very up and coming and there are a few art galleries and lots of little independent restaurants in the old high street. The newish high street is not as pretty. I love the big old house that have been converted into flats and probably see myself retiring down there.

justteanbiscuits · 04/04/2023 16:50

No, I utterly love Folkestone harbour area and really want to move there.

There are rough areas - avoid anywhere near the Grand Burstin, but the harbour area has been massively revitalised and is now very cool. I will be there for Easter Weekend. (I do really really wish they'd do something about the Burstin though. It could be an amazing building. But it's just a massive shit hole at the moment)

I used to love next door practically to that club around 2000! Grin

Last time I 'loved' in the town centre we had a bucket of water thrown over us ! Grin

Not saying it's rough but once when I went into Folkestone Town Centre a drunken youth came over to me deliberately to vomit right in front of me - grim!!

DH and I were talking about that the other day :-D

Itsbytheby · 04/04/2023 16:53

I love folkestone, we visit there often. But I agree I imagine it's quite a deprived area to live in.

gogohmm · 04/04/2023 17:05

Last weekend I read an article saying it was the hottest place to move to ... but unfortunately all I've seen is the queue for the tunnel!

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 04/04/2023 17:07

It's up and coming just like Hastings has been the next Brighton for the last 25 years. No doubt it has the same levels of coastal poverty/deprivation/child poverty. Might have less homeless.

driedgrassinavase · 04/04/2023 17:09

i like folkestone and live nearby but the harbour area is a pretty rough place to live. The west end of folkestone / cheriton / hawkinge are nice but harbour / east end / black bull road / Canterbury road - no thank you!

Callmecordelia · 04/04/2023 17:42

I would only live in the west end of Folkestone personally.

I live in Folkestone ..we do have a cinema? Not a big one like Ashford but we do have one. The harbour area isn't as deprived as it used to be but definitely not one of the best areas of Folkestone to live. The East Cliff and West End areas are best I think.

tothelefttotheleft · 04/04/2023 19:18

Apparently there are one bed flats for sale along front he harbour which are 500k for a one bedroom. It was on the local radio earlier.

tothelefttotheleft · 04/04/2023 19:19

It's called the shoreline development.

We live off two of the roads mentioned here and love our street and our home. We have an amazing garden. Our kids go to fantastic schools. I haven't seen or heard any antisocial behaviour in the four years I've lived here. Old snobbery dies hard, it seems. The east end is changing, it's much more vibrant and eclectic now.

Bobdi · 25/04/2024 17:00

We moved to the East Cliff area of Folkestone 6 months ago. We knew the town well having visited friends regularly for over 30 years. The Harbour area has changed a lot of the decades. It used to be very run down but has seen a lot of regeneration over the years with more to come. Like any other town Folkestone has it's better areas and not so good areas ( what town doesn't). The town centre is not attractive with nothing really to entice the shopper, but there are some great cafes and restaurants. Whilst I wouldn't venture into the town or harbour late at night on my own,( same as I wouldn't in most towns) during the day it is a lovely place. People stop and chat, the pace of life seems slower than the large Kent towns nearby. There are 2 theatres providing a range of entertainment and locally various music events.

We love it - there's improvements to be made, but the benefits of the beautiful coastline, coastal pathway walks and stunning scenery make up for it's shortfall.
