Name changed as possibly outing but I want to know if others agree or disagree with me. And what they may have done in my situation.
My work doesn't advertise pay on their job ads. I am in a role which I would say needs a couple of years experience and had some experience prior to starting as well as a good few years indirect but relevant experience in another field.
My gripe is to do with salary and the correlation with experience and job role. I had to offer a job to someone with significantly less experience than myself (different department to me) but similar job level and their starting salary is 1k per year more than me, which they did ask for.
I have now since found out that a new start who joined few months ago in an entry level role (different dept too) is on just under 500 less per year than me - this person has no previous work experience. A colleague let that one slip and the new start was offered that wage off the bat, they didn't ask.
Had I of known what I know now, I'd of asked for a few thousand more but by not advertising salary I didn't know what was reasonable or not and now can see I've clearly undersold myself. Please know I don't begrudge these people, I just feel my salary doesn't acknowledge the work I do or experience I have.
There will be a salary review in the next few months, but they too will get an uplift, so really the gap remains the same. The whole situation has left a sour taste for me and feel like I'd be better jumping ship.
Aibu to be annoyed? And what would you do? I don't think saying to HR will make any difference.
