We're travelling tomorrow morning and I'm dreading it! The reports I'm reading mainly mention problems with coaches and we'll be in a car. It sounds seagull for al the school kids stuck there, I really feel for them.
I need to work out how much food and In car entertainment to pack!

@Aposterhasnoname ''Sigh, read the full thread sweetheart. It really helps you to not make yourself look like a dick.''

Once you need to resort to posting comment like the above, you have already lost any kind of argument you were trying to make and all credibility.

I shouldn't say Brits, sorry. It was an English referendum.

@readbooksdrinktea

My Scottish parents, who lived in Scotland, voted "leave". It wasn't just English people who voted for it...

Floralnomad · 02/04/2023 11:16

The most visible demonstration of this is the arrangement that the UK gets the chaos, not the French. And as strong Leave supporters, it seems Kent has very little to complain about here
Many of us in Kent did not vote leave , that is a big generalisation

readbooksdrinktea · 02/04/2023 11:17

The bottom line is the moment the UK voted to leave the EU, 27 countries immediately decided that the pain of that decision was not going to affect them.

Precisely. Rightfully so. I don't understand how that is a surprise to anyone.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 02/04/2023 11:18

SerendipityJane · 02/04/2023 11:13

So what's changed ?

JHC we left the EU and lost freedom of movement so each person has to get there passport stamped. Previously someone would board the coach count the heads, the group leader would give them the passports they would make sure there were as many passengers as passports and off you go. That was if you were pulled over. Most were just waived through. How do you not know this stuff?

Apologies. I stand corrected. Thank you.

@familyissues12345 are they on their way now?

There have been issues at Dover (and most ports actually) since forever. I remember as a child my family used to holiday in France via ferry and we'd always be stuck in the queue to get the boat for bloody hours. That was in the 90s and early 00s. Annoyingly my parents always fly places now 🙄

I agree it was the same for us during 1990s to the point where we gave up and got flights instead.
The main problem appeared to be lack of staff, so I suspect it's a similar problem now.

My sons ski trip has just been cancelled after the kids spent 17 hours at dover & they can’t feasibly get the kids to Italy safely- fuck the Tory cunts. He’s so upset after a year of planning

I hope you get some money back, how upsetting for your son!

Skiing is - or should be - the preserve of the rich, donchaknow ?

It was your kids - and their kids - that I marched, chanted, protested and petitioned for. I haven't forgotten. Neither have you. And your kids certainly won't.

Mind you, I saw a picture of Rishi looking at a hole in the ground recently. Quite apart from it's metaphorical irony, it was reminding us that we will be seeing the Tories back in power in 2024, if not before. All because Rishi knows what a hole is.

CAPTION COMPETITION:

If we start digging now, we can get to France by 2123.

We've found a Brexit benefit.

Just a little closer sir, don't fall in...

Nigel Farage celebrating

Kent overwhelmingly votes to leave the EU

People in Kent vote strongly in favour of leaving the European Union with Tunbridge Wells the only district voting to remain.

I actually think its unfair to blame those who didn't vote in the referendum for Brexit (not surprising though). Put the blame where it belongs, with the people who voted for it. They 'knew what they voted for' and can own the whole sorry mess.

I think it's worse than that, they didn't know what they were voting for but voted anyway. Sheer arrogance and ignorance. So many people nonplussed at the 'news' that our Island country has a land border with Europe.

notimagain · 02/04/2023 11:27

SerendipityJane · 02/04/2023 11:13

So what's changed ?

Pre-Brexit for Brits - the PAF (French Border Police) just looked at the passport for validity etc and usually did a quick swipe on their magic scanner.

Post Brexit it's the above plus the extra checks to see if you have a residency card/ long term visa and if not a check against the 90/180 Schengen zone requirement...so the time taken by PAF ( for the French Border) to process each British Passport holder as increased.

Crikeyalmighty · 02/04/2023 11:31

People have been sheltered from the Brexit bollocks by not going away so much - now it's back and force being felt.expect airport chaos too- not only are the facts that passports actually have to be looked at and stamped but many staff who did this have left to go back within EU- we didn't exactly make them feel welcome. I met so many lovely EU young people in Copenhagen and Stockholm who had left the UK to go to Scandinavia

Kendodd · 02/04/2023 11:31

Worse still, in 2019 when they voted to 'get Brexit done' they knew that this risked the peace in NI, they'd already watched one person murdered. They didn't give a shit. I have nothing but contempt for Brexit supporters now.

But that's what people wanted.

Not really sure I understand why this is news ? Although these days it's rare for the public to get what they want, so I suppose that's it.

Maybe people would get through faster if they showed a portrait of the King instead of a passport ? Would certainly justify the £8,000,000 that ain't going into the NHS, housing, foodbanks, or other practical uses.

itsgettingweird · 02/04/2023 11:35

This is total brexit brain though - other countries are not obliged to change their working practices or organisational plans to compensate for our choices.

Why should they need to make changes to keep us happy?

Agree they shouldn't. Doesn't stop me wondering if they have a reason not to increase staff capacity to what's needed though.

Currently I guess it's because people will still travel despite knowing they pay for 5 days skiing and get 4.

If at some point bookings decreased and the countries suffered economically themselves that may change?

You're right, its exactly what they voted for.
I'm sure Putin was delighted with them.

I really wonder what the leavers are thinking now

They’re thinking “I can’t believe those French cunts are doing this to us”.
You can’t argue with stupid.

Speaking of which…

@Aposterhasnoname, you’re the only one looking like a dick here. Surely you understand that when you leave one country, you’re in another? At Dover, you’re being screened for entry into France.

Covid masked a lot of Brexit issues but now that people are moving again, scenes like this will become all the more common.

Aposterhasnoname · 02/04/2023 11:38

Clymene · 02/04/2023 11:05

@Aposterhasnoname you're the one being a dick. French passport control has been at Dover for cross channel ferries since 2004 - long before Brexit.

Huh, why the fuck am I being attacked here . I never use ferries, passports are not stamped on exiting the uk from airports. My question was has that changed, the answer is no.

FrostyFifi · 02/04/2023 11:38

So what's changed ?

Every single passport now needs to be inspected and wet-stamped rather than just waved to show you had an EU (as the UK passport was at the time) passport.
Multiply the time taken for that by cars and coaches full of people during a busy period and you get the massive delays now taking place.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 02/04/2023 11:39

Clymene · 02/04/2023 11:02

They might be now. The referendum was in 2016. The overwhelming majority were older than that. Basically a load of old people nearing retirement or already retired ruined the UK's economic future. And I will never stop being angry about it!

Exactly.

And those who could have stopped it were too lazy to get out & vote.

Again, I don’t use ferries, you don’t have passports stamped exiting through airports. Fuck me I wish I’d never asked now.

The best part is I’m a fucking remainer who thought there was yet another reason to hate the Brexit shitshow

“Huh, why the fuck am I being attacked here . I never use ferries, passports are not stamped on exiting the uk from airports. My question was has that changed, the answer is no”

We flew from Manchester last year and had to queue at Passport control for nearly two hours to have our passports checked before we were allowed to proceed. I can’t remember if they were actually stamped but they were scrutinised. It was pandemonium and lots of people missed their flights. EU citizens walked through without hold up 🤷‍♀️ first time I’d been persuaded onto a flight in nearly 20 years. Won’t bother again.

.expect airport chaos too- not only are the facts that passports actually have to be looked at and stamped

I'm not sure airports are effected to the same extent at all TBH...the events at the Channel Ports are not down to recent changes.

At most French airports as a Brit passport holder even pre-Brexit you joined the "not Schengen" queue so were lumped in and queued anyway with those arriving from the US/Africa etc, being EU or not didn't change much- certainly not at our local airport...The only benefit you got as a Brit was that when you actually got to the control point you got a quick basic check....

The post Brexit changes only really change your transaction time at the airport control points..which adds to general queue length but wasn't a major change requiring modification of infrastucture etc..

The channel ferries set up OTOH historically seems to have relied very much more on getting people through on the assumption pretty much everybody travelling was a EU passport holder, minimal checks required. Come Brexit and they didn't have the infrastructure or manning to change quickly to a system where everybody needed comprehensive checks. Couple that with high demand and possibly service disruption and.....
