How do you keep the cost down sometimes I can read a book in an evening so can’t keep buying new really.

Kindle unlimited is great, so many books on there

DoAWheelie · 02/04/2023 09:02

Libgen for ebooks

Libraries and occasionally charity shops. Still not free for me as I've read everything good in my library so have to pay for inter-library loans (2 euros per book) but its a lot cheaper than buying new and often cheaper than charity shops.

DivaDarling · 02/04/2023 09:17

I read a lot-100 books a year. i buy some new, a very small number second hand and use the library.

You can reserve books and order in books for a very small fee. In fact, I would urge everyone to use their library because when the authorities are liable to close libraries as part of cost cutting.

They did that a few years ago where I live but were forced to re-open most of them.

So, everyone use your library! I would go as far to say, use your library even if you don't read the books you take out-it helps those who do use the library. It's a duty!

A03 is free if you can get over the stigma of fanfiction
Don't get me wrong, some of it is bloody shocking, but one of the best 'books' I ever read was fanfiction

BookishBabe · 02/04/2023 09:19

Libraries are so easy.
Most have online systems now so you can reserve online and get them sent to your local branch and renew online.
I prefer it because sometimes a book just isn't good, if I've paid £5 or £10 for it I'm absolutely gutted.
But charity shops don't really work because some time I want something specific or new and the chances of finding it in a charity shop is slim.
Libraries! If we don't use them we'll lose them.

Most family members give me Waterstones gift cards at some point each year. There is an old phone box which now is a book swap. Charity shops. A garden centre ynear here has books for 50 p. Lots of places selling second hand books..

I do a daily check of the Kindle Daily Deal and then a monthly check of the deals in my preferred genre. I have about 500 books on my Kindle (amassed over many years). Having so many means I forget the stories of older ones and then get the joy of rediscovering and rereading them. (I’m currently rereading Robin Hobb’s Elderlings collection and it’s so good.)

I done trials of Kindle Unlimited occasionally, but they don’t have enough of the books I like to read, so buying is better for me. Plus I like to own the good ones so that I can reread them later.

AuntieMarys · 02/04/2023 09:27

I read about 100 books a year. Our charity shop is 50p a book which is great, but I get a lot from World of Books and Ebay. Bought 3 hb books last night from there...all new releases...£15 instead of the £35 they were on Amazon. Free delivery too.
I keep a list of all the new releases I want to read and check prices online regularly.

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 02/04/2023 09:27

Kindle unlimited I got 5 months for £2.99 just hold out of the deals, if you have a library card borrow box and Libby are free too.

JulieHoney · 02/04/2023 09:31

I only like physical books.

If I’m after a specific title I try Abe Books first before buying it new.

I use the little free libraries locally (we have quite a few) and swap books with friends quite a lot. I love to re read, I’d guess roughly half my reading time is revisiting those I’ve read before. And I use the library quite a bit, especially the free audio books service.

Same! I've read some amazing fanfiction, better than the books it was based on.

Kindle unlimited and 99p deals.

This and also the library. When i was a child we went to the library every Saturday and I kept this up until I got a kindle in my 50s. I think I should use the library more often to keep it open but the kindle is so good for reading in bed without having to put the light on.

Project Gutenberg has free ebooks. Mostly out of copyright so typically older books/classics. Completely free.

Thelnebriati · 02/04/2023 12:12

I just came here to say if you like classic books check out Project Gutenberg! You can make a donation if you use it a lot.

Library. I read around 4 books a week. Right now flying through Goose Green…started it yesterday and halfway through it. It’s 50p to order a book too, which I will do as well.
