Do I put my cat back on the expensive cat food?

Hi I currently have one female pedigree cat who is 2. She is the light of my life who I love very much.

She was on Royal Canin Intense Beauty wet and dry food which was £13.50 for 12 pouches and then the dry when I ran out.

Due to cost of living Pets at Home put Price up to £16.49 for 12. My DP asked me to change the food due to how expensive.

I put her on Purina One and then Purina Mon Petit. For 48 pouches it was £18 on another website.

Since changing her coat has gone downhill and she now also has dandruff. Her fur looks shabby and I feel v guilty.

I want to put her back on Royal Canin. I also pay fee 22 per month to vets for all consultations, flea, vacs etc plus 17 for insurance. So it all adds up.

I pay it all out my wages. If I put her back on Royal Canin I won't be able to adopt a cat.

Wedding and baby on the way so I need to minimise costs. But I can't justify cutting her food that makes her healthy. When she was on it she glowed.

But my DP is adamant. I will ignore him and do what I want as I say its my money. But want other opinions??

Please don’t feed your cat Purina.

Theres a whole Facebook group about it and it seems your cat is already showing signs that it’s awful food.

Have you tried meowing heads? 93% meat content, and no grains/sugars. It’s on 3 for 2 at Pets at Home at the moment but you can get it on Amazon too.

Thank you so much. I'm learning alot talking to you all. I'm first time cat mum and just learning. I didn't know this about the foods. I've looked at RC label with fresh eyes and I'm genuinely horrified. Wtf. I trusted that it was good due to the price etc. I feel quite guilty now.

Not heard of that before. Will look at it. Thank you.

So in a nutshell I need stuff without grains, meat 60% or over and taurine???

That's what I'm feeding her at the moment and her fur is awful. I'm waiting to get paid on Thursday then will begin transferring her over onto cool cat. I do think I will be putting her on Katkin though.

General rule as high a meat content as you can afford - and not “meat derivatives”. Cats are carnivores, the fillers, grains and sugars can lead to health issues as you’ve seen in your cat.

You need a complete food, not complimentary.

So yes, you should be reading the meat content, and looking for grain free. It’s complicated at first but gets easier I promise. Cool cats club is a good one 😊

Our three cats get extremely upset tummies with bloody diarrhoea if they touch any supermarket wet food.
wensimolt buy the royal Canin gastrointestinal complete from petdrugs online and then buy 2 medium fresh chickens a week and gently boil them. This we found a whole cheaper and their coats are amazing and tummies not upset.
win win as the digs get to have the chicken skin and we get the stock for meals :-)).
I also occasionally give them a tin of tuna.
they are normal domestic tabbies, but any cats previous I’ve never had a problem with whiskas, but these three are exceptionally sensitive.

Blink is also good and you can get a trial box, I think I got 6 pouches for a pound and a couple of quid delivery.

My master cat turned her nose up at it though.

I can't tell how grateful I am to you all. I've told DP to bog off as well.

Also, told my Mum and his Mum and they've told him to mind his own business, what is it to do with him what I spend my money on.

Yes I know that's childish but he's really annoyed me today.

Haha master love it!

My DP got in the spare bed last night and she was asleep on the bed and he didn't want to move her. She was right in the middle so every time he moved his leg or tried to make space she swiped him.

Good girl!

Then she came in with me for snuggles.

@TinyKitty thanks - she doesn't have exclusively cosma, I alternate it about 50/50. She likes Rosie's Farm and Wild Freedom too- but not quite so much.
She's been having Cosma so long, it didn't used to have the 'not a complete food' warning at first - I did take some to the vets with me, and he thought the balance of her diet overall is fine.

Got wise to the rice stuffed 'oriental' range too & stopped buying that.

I had fish and chips the other evening - very rare - saved her some fish and she was so enthusiastic I thought she was going to eat the box it came in.

I'm not sure about the other issues but with obesity are they active? My one is an indoor, is semi active, but loves her food. She's roughly 5kg now.

Well I have 2 cats and 1 is overweight and 1 is OK. The overweight one is always hungry, we weigh their food out though to avoid overeating once we realised we had a problem! She got fat having all the high meat content zooplus ones so I need to choose what I do carefully

I hope you managed to find an alternative to RC
I have two cats on wet food and this is very good quality at a budget price. High meat content, grain free, pâté style.

For my two I serve 100g per meal so will be about £60 per month if I subscribe. The foil packs cost more but are more practical for single cats.
