To not want DD going abroad for cosmetic surgery?

icepetal · 01/04/2023 18:29

Namechanged so old posts about her don't potentially identify her.

DD is now 22 and has booked to go to Lithuania to have her ears pinned back and an arm lift (she lost 3 stone and for some reason her upper arms were left with a lot of skin).

I'm absolutely petrified for her. Admittedly I don't know much about Lithuania at all but having any surgery abroad is a no for me. She said she can't afford to have it here and the loan she is already taking is the most she can afford to repay already.

I want to support her, I think she is perfect how she is but they are both huge insecurities of hers, with the ears being since she was a child and now I partly wishes we had agreed to have them done on the NHS when she was little, so I'm not against her doing what will improve her confidence loads.

I'm just against her going abroad.

Suggested she maybe wait and save more and she said she doesn't want to waste more of her life feeling this way.

I hate the idea Sad

My friend went to Lithuania for a tummy tuck and now she can’t extend her arms over her head as they took too much skin off and stitched it too tight. Although I’m sure the same mistakes could be made anywhere.

She needs be wary, and do her research.

I know someone who went for an op in Turkey recently and returned unwell. Turns out, she had a kidney removed during that op.

You cannot be serious 😱

Unfortunately, I am very serious.

I was stunned when I heard.

Jesus. What was the original surgery and how did she find out she was minus a kidney? Sounds like something from a horror movie.

StillWantingADog · 01/04/2023 20:44

A colleague took his son to Lithuania for a knee op which would have either been extremely expensive or an extremely long wait on the nhs.

they we’re both treated wonderfully, great experience.

nor for an operation but I’ve been to Lithuania and it’s a pretty civilised place. I’d go there over Turkey for an op. And I quite like Turkey!

I wont go into details but she had to be opened up for part of the procedure.

Then she returned home very unwell. Hospital scanned her and discovered it.

And, I did comment at the time that it sounded like a horror movie plot.

I'd be interested to know why she was opened. A sleeve is keyhole surgery.

I had my gallbladder removed at the same time and that was still done by keyhole.

I can't think of a reason they would insist on open surgery, but at that point I wouldn't have been having the op with them.

Gosh I hope your friend is as recovered as one can be when they're a kidney down. I feel a bit 🤢 now, poor her.

I dont know the person involved and I would feel so ghoulish for asking the person who does know her the ins and outs.

It's grim to think that whoever took that kidney is probably making money out of something so disgusting.

Sound like one of those friend of a friend urban myths tbh.

People never actually know the people themselves when saying this stuff.

It does like an urban myth, tbh.

It's probably spread around the town like one.

I heard a kidney removed story too. Patient went to have breast procedure and was told they would need to take skin grafting from her flank. Got back to the U.K. very poorly and was found to be missing a kidney.

I’ve heard you can go to turkey for organ transplant if willing to pay the £££.

all hear say and friend of a friend stories though so not sure how true!!

Did you get your surgical notes regarding your weight-loss surgery from Turkey?

Bane of my professional life, trying to ascertain the manufacturer and model of your Turkish-fitted gastric band so we can perform an MRI safely on you!

And, interestingly, not you, I'm sure- 😊 a major source of patient complaints as to why we aren't just going ahead and scanning them.

Is it really something you come across often? 🤔
I find people don't tend to spend thousands and travel far for a band. In fact, it's very unusual.

Exactly this

It is risky to go abroad - and there is a reason why the reviews are so great - they are heavily sanitised by the company and instantly deleted if negative

For balance, urge her to join the Facebook group 'Victims of botched surgery and malpractice, patient support UK'

Nords is categorically NOT ok. If she can join the group then she will be able to see the other side of the coin.

I've had 3 lots of plastic surgery - one was a tummy tuck. I would never travel abroad in a million years

If she is absolutely intent on it then she must research the other side - not the glowing reviews on Insta etc. do not go via anything with a rep - and most will have a rep. And try and avoid anyone who also carries out dangerous surgeries like BBLs

Oh and arm surgery is a very difficult surgery to get right in even the most experienced hands

I had cosmetic surgery in Cyprus and it was excellent.

Please could you give me the name of the clinic you used as I’m considering Cyprus.
