Am I mad to book a coach to Europe next week?

The news from Dover is horrendous. However the middle of next week I want to visit family and flights are about six times the cost.
Whats the chance of coach travel smoothing out by next Thursday….? 😬

I think it'll be worse as people take advantage of the bank holiday.

MaltedCow · 01/04/2023 13:49

Hmm depends if you find sitting on a coach relaxing. Maybe load up on snacks, drinks, books, ear plugs and a pillow and go in expecting the worst then anything other than massive delays is a bonus.

The day before the Easter weekend? Really bad I imagine.

RosesInWater · 01/04/2023 13:51

Can you use any other departure point?

Disgustipated · 01/04/2023 13:53

Sorry, not next Thursday. The 13th 🤦‍♀️

Spoke to family

The coach is about £22. It’s the only route option
Train about £260, flights similar. It’s a massive massive difference- hence wondering.

If you’re going on your own without kids I’d go for it, load up on food and drinks take a few good books and hope for the best.

RosesInWater · 01/04/2023 13:59

If there is a toilet on board the coach, or facilities available during the hours waiting (Well that would be MY biggest concern), I would do it.

Disgustipated · 01/04/2023 14:00

Have to take kids. That’s part of the reason £22 tickets are such an option.

The coaches always have toilets

It doesn’t look fun, but the alternative is not seeing family until august

I think it would be fine without kids, but otherwise it will be horrendous. Sorry!

Flixbus uses the Eurotunnel vs the ferry.

They vary. It’s just a booking platform. This one is currently showing a dfds crossing. You only see the operator when you see the coach

Well hopefully at least the channel will have smoothed out, a lot of the delays ATM are supposedly down to the after effects of Storm Mathis.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 01/04/2023 14:17

How old are your kids? Mine at 8 and 11 would be fine as long as there was WiFi, but younger kids nope!!

How long is the coach journey?

Delatron · 01/04/2023 14:19

It might have settled down by then. My DS went on Thursday and there were no delays. I think today is probably the worst day. And maybe around the bank holidays next week.

FiveHundredDucksWentOutOneDay · 01/04/2023 14:23

Ooofff. By myself I'd do it, but with the kids, I'd probably not.

August isn't that far away, and the potential for absolute chaos would be too high for me.

That’s what I wanted to hear 😄
