To ask what on earth is this children's book... driving me mad!

I have a little boy who loves books. I remember a book I read as a small child that I absolutely adored, and gives me such a warm fuzzy feeling when I think back to it. I'd love to read it with my son. Trouble is, I can't remember what it was called. Can anyone help?

Here are the things I can remember:
It is a colle tip of short stories.
It's about a toyshop full of toys.
The toys are magical and come to life.
There are dolls, a Teddy and a jack in a box.
In one of the stories, the toys all go outside at night and getting muddy and cold.

I think it was a hardback book in portrait. I've gone loads of Googling but although there seems to be loads of magic toyshop books, I can't find the one I had and loved!
Thanks in advance!

Definitely look up the Jane Hissey series, that's what I think you mean. Titles include old bear, jolly tall, little bear trousers

Also try ‘Teddy Robinson’ which isn’t the book you’re describing but I think you’d like it!

I came on to say exactly this!

Sadly not Jane Hissey... it was one single book with a collection of short stories in it. Definitely a variety of toys - dolls, teddies, a jack in the box...

It might be Enid Blyton, Magic in the Playroom

Magic in the playroom: When the goblins in the garden begin stealing the belongings of the playroom toys, the toys decide to take action to get them back, and find an unusual aid to help them in their plan.

The Corduroy series by Don Freeman?

JubbyMomma · 31/03/2023 21:26

Is it ‘park in the dark’ by Martin Waddell ? If not, I was also thinking ‘old bear’ too - that definitely produces a warm nostalgic feeling for me.

Getthefiregoing · 31/03/2023 21:27

Sounds like Raggedy Ann and Andy to me

MayasJam · 31/03/2023 21:29

Velveteen rabbit?

surreygirl1987 · 31/03/2023 21:31

Sadly none of these. Just googled the ones I hadn't heard of. I can visualise some of the pages but can't really describe them. So frustrating!!

Thank you though for all your help. Might tey the reddit thread suggested by a previous poster. I really appreciate the efforts everyone has made to find it! Will post back if I find it!

Did it have peg dolls in it? Like a nanny or nurse or similar?

Was it Blyton’s Tales of Toyland with Jolly the Sailor and Tiptoe the fairy? That was one of my faves.

Mine too! I recently bought a first edition of it in a second hand bookshop. Three of the characters have names you definitely wouldn't find in any books now! (actually tbf you wouldn't find those characters at all, given the type of toy they are)

TotallyScouting · 31/03/2023 21:40

This has triggered a memory in me too! I am convinced it is Enid Blyton, though I did read anything and everything as a child. M and S (or St Michaels as the books were branded) used to do their own collections of her short stories in quite large bound books. Could it have been one of those?

Tulipvase · 31/03/2023 21:43

The lost toys?

ThreeB · 31/03/2023 21:48

Was it the Puddle Lane books?

piedbeauty · 31/03/2023 21:50

The Animal Shelf?

LittleBlueBrioTrain · 31/03/2023 21:50

This has made me think of a book that I can only vaguely recall the cover of - like a dusty pinky purple colour?

izzywizzywont · 31/03/2023 21:52

The shoe shop bears by Margaret baker

I wanted to buy a copy recently but the toys on the cover were just too ‘wrong’ so I could not bring it home.

I loved the story where a character ?the clockwork clown lost his home so they bought him ready-made rooms to rebuild it. I think. Or something like that?! Or was it a bear. Called Bruin? I might be making it up now.

Mummapenguin20 · 31/03/2023 21:58

The animal shelf maybe

turnthebiglightoff · 31/03/2023 21:58

It reminds me of the Raggy Dolls tv series

Iyjd · 31/03/2023 22:06

The wonderful teddy bear? Also by Enid Blyton but the story sounds familiar and I ready it repeatedly as a child

Barton10 · 31/03/2023 22:09

Sounds like Amelia Jane by Enid Blyton. The toys live in the nursery and come alive and leave the playroom.

Nothinglefttogiv · 31/03/2023 22:14

Oscar the cat?
