To tell you how to turn off the government alert if you have a secret phone

I saw this video from Refuge that gives clear instructions on how to turn the phone alert off on android and apple phones.

Obviously some people have secret phones for less than innocent reasons, however some victims of abuse may have a secret phone for emergencies or planning to leave and the alert could jeopardize their safety if this is the case. The alert will sound even if phone is on silent.

Apologies if already shared. I know it's been mentioned on other threads but couldn't see a link to the video, will be sharing generically on social media in case it helps anyone on my friend list etc.

@XenoBitch that's strange! I have an oppo and if I search emergency it comes up under emergency alerts then wireless emergency alerts... Is your operating system updated?

I can't update anymore... phone is too old. I searched for 'emergency' in settings as per the video, and it said nothing found.

RaininSummer · 31/03/2023 19:37

How do I tell if I have it on my phone anyway please?

Go to your settings and scroll down, you should see it there under emergency alerts.

meow1989 · 31/03/2023 19:38

@RaininSummer if you follow the steps on the video it'll take you to where they are Smile

Sorry, forgot to say it's in your apps in your settings.

Not all older phones can receive emergency alerts

Emergency alerts work on:

  • iPhones running iOS 14.5 or later
  • Android phones and tablets running Android 11 or later
If you have an earlier version of Android, you may still be able to receive alerts. To check, search your device settings for ‘emergency alerts’.

Dymaxion · 31/03/2023 19:54

Will it work if the phone is actually switched off ? Do we know when the alert is supposed to happen time wise ?

meow1989 · 31/03/2023 19:59

@Dymaxion apparently not, gov UK says

Emergency alerts work on all 4G and 5G phone networks in the UK.
Your mobile phone or tablet does not have to be connected to mobile data or wifi to get alerts.

Emergency alerts are free. You do not need to sign up for them or download an app.

Reasons you will not get an alert
You will not receive alerts if your device is:

turned off or in airplane mode
connected to a 2G or 3G network
wifi only
not compatible

Older versions of Android and iOS don't have this functionality as the ability to receive these alerts is baked into the operating system. So if you came from Nd the emergency settings the. The chances are you won't be able to receive them on your phone anyway.

jc12689 · 31/03/2023 20:09

Sorry typos. What I was trying to say is that if you don't have the emergency alert settings your phone is probably not capable of receiving them.
