To wonder wtf easter bonnet parades are all about?!

My child had her first Easter bonnet parade today. I have never seen or taken part in one so I didn't know what to expect. I helped my child with her's but ultimately it was her doing what she loves best cutting and sticking a bunch of junk on a hat. Then out come kids in tonnes of kids in absolutely immaculate bonnets clearly entirely made by their parents. It was quite cute but what exactly is the point in it?! Who actually has time to sit there for hours with a glue gun etc and surely it's much better for the child if they at least play some part in creating it otherwise it's basically just parents showing off. I really am not miserable about school traditions and get as involved as I can and don't even mind putting in some effort if it's for the benefit of the kids but this one I just don't get. My child loves crafts and is very creative so it'd be a much nicer tradition for her to take the lead with it. AIBU to think this? And in most schools do the parents make them or the kids? The worst part was that my child was obviously quite sad and deflated as I think she knew that lots were 'better' than her's which made me feel really rubbish too

There shouldn't be prizes. That's my only opinion on the topic.

LetUsPonce · 31/03/2023 16:14

@Lamelie

Excellent! A Mumsnet classic.

The entire thread was hilarious, if anyone can still locate it.

Apologies if the op is still around. I screenshotted it from Mumsnet 10 years ago- is this bonnet scary?

I think it's amazing. It's like something my husband would make for our daughter if this country had the Easter bonnet tradition 😂

I was wondering what the history behind the bonnet parade is earlier today. It seems slightly odd. Our school has never run a bonnet competition so it doesn't matter whether the parents or children have made them. I usually did most of it because my kids couldn't be bothered.

I am having cancer treatment at the moment and one the other children in my son's class made an extra one and brought it in for him because we hadn't made one. I don't think they know I am ill but I really appreciated it and thought it was lovely of them.

Oh that is very sweet 😊

Best wishes to you, btw.

My DC won the parade two years running because theirs were the only ones that looked like they had done most of the work themselves - I was very proud of myself for letting them loose with the glue and scissors

Traditionally people used to try to buy something new at Easter to wear to Church and often a bonnet was the cheapest thing they could purchase new or revamp. (They didn't parade in them though).

HalfMast · 31/03/2023 16:19

I usually ended up doing these things because my child wasn’t that interested and it was another thing on the long list of stuff that needed doing for school. Nobody would mistake my / our effort for something from Pinterest though.

Tidsleytiddy · 31/03/2023 16:21

And no doubt all the mums in yet another competition with each other

BeanCounterBabe · 31/03/2023 16:24

I’m 48 and Easter bonnet parades were a thing when I was growing up, at several schools (army brat moved frequently). You can definitely tell who’s bonnets we’re all their own work. My mum didn’t do crafts so my creations were all my own. Usually a paper plate with daffodils made from egg boxes and crepe paper glued on held on my head with a ribbon.

stbrandonsboat · 31/03/2023 16:30

My dcs had SN and weren't able to do theirs so I had to do them. I used a hot glue gun and we reused the hats each year and nobody noticed.

It's just more crap for busy parents to worry about 🙄

Phineyj · 31/03/2023 16:33

DD and I made an Among Us themed one last year. It was black and had a little searchlight.

Obviously it didn't win but boy did I have fun.

It was the only black one in a sea of yellow and green.

Had never heard of them until my kids were in primary school. Are they a modern invention or was I a deprived child?

We made them at school in the 80s

AinmÁlainn · 31/03/2023 16:34

The Easter bonnet parade in our non denominational school Hmm gives me the fucking rage. They wang on about the green flag programme and walk on Wednesdays and then they have all this shitty tat thrown together for 10 minutes in the rain and swiftly into the bin. As annoying as Christmas jumpers are, at least they have a month or so wear and along with Halloween costumes are recycled/sold on through pta fundraisers.

We made them all through primary school in the 80s so definitely not a new thing

Although it was more of a mish mash of ribbon, crepe paper and pipe cleaners all stuck on with PVA glue than anything extravagant if I remember correctly

Nothing stopping you making one out of compostable stuff or stuff out of your recycling bin

Albiboba · 31/03/2023 17:08

Did an Easter bonnet competition every year in the 90s.

Thus rendering the makings neither recyclable or compostable.

Phineyj · 31/03/2023 17:16

Actually that's a great idea. I'm going to suggest an environmental theme next year. You have to make them out of things that are biodegradable or recyclable. No plastic.

The one I liked most today was a yellow tshirt tacked onto the crown of a hat. An egg yolk!

We did them at my junior school and I am 46!

they were definitely all done by the kids back then - no social media to impress.

rogueone · 31/03/2023 17:38

I hear you- same thing over here today. Lots of kids with bought bonnets. My sons flowers wilted and went brown overnight and his stuck on smarties lost there colour due to the glue 😂

To wonder wtf easter bonnet parades are all about?!
rogueone · 31/03/2023 17:39

That photo was taken the night before

Spanielsarepainless · 31/03/2023 17:43

My parents remember them from nearly ninety years ago.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 31/03/2023 17:49

Welcome to the world of competitive parenting! Some of the Easter bonnets at my DD's school were amazing but definitely not done by the child. I don't have a creative bone in my body so my DD's efforts were very basic.

birdling · 31/03/2023 17:54

I used to teach at a school where we had an Easter bonnet competition each year.
The prize was always, always awarded to a child who had clearly had had no adult input. 😄

scrumpledtitskin · 31/03/2023 17:57

@Lamelie thank goodness you posted that. I've been sat like so many others cackling just waiting for it to pop up. Now I need to search for the thread🤣🤣🤣

We did Easter bonnets in primary school and I'm 50, it's not a new thing
