To ask - Charlton, South East London - is it 'working class?'

I knew someone who lived there and loved it - they went to a secondary school which was local - Eaglesfield School for boys. I got the impression from them that this was a nice area and that the secondary school was very academic/good. However I've also heard opinions to the contrary saying it's rough.

Any opinions?

By the way I know that working class and rough aren't synonymous- but - you know what I mean here

It was traditionally a working class area, but has gentrified somewhat as people who can’t afford areas such as Greenwich or Blackheath have moved in. It’s okay. A bit quiet and dull. I prefer Woolwich.

Only know Charlton for the footy and never had any worries about DS going to watch it there. Nice friendly place. DS was born in Woolwich and we lived in Blackheath for a bit. Nice area.

Lovely - thank you both ! I've been briefly in Woolwich to catch a bus!

Does it matter?

Dreamysaurus · 31/03/2023 12:15

Who actually cares?

RiktheButler · 31/03/2023 12:16

Are you asking if it's "working class" or if it's "rough"? Or are you conflating the two?

No - my second post above confirms that I know they're not synonymous terms !!

It’s gentrifying - lots of middle class families who are priced out of greenwich and blackheath move there. Basically a decent area but with some rough bits (like most of London).

tinkerbellvspredator · 31/03/2023 12:20

Presumably the OP is looking at places to live so wants to get opinions on what it's like.
The people that I know who live in Charlton are all firmly.middle class with high incomes. Like all areas in London there will be a mix. It's always quiet when I've been there.

But that's what you chose to post, excusing it with "you know what I mean" doesn't change anything

I'm not originally from London, but I've lived in Charlton for the past 9 years. It's a totally mixed area some parts are rough and others aren't (like most places in London). The housing is more affordable than other areas nearby, the transport is good, there's outstanding schools, loads of shops and people are generally friendly. I know most of my neighbours on this street. No idea why it isn't more popular tbh!

Newpuppymummy · 31/03/2023 12:21

It’s got rough bits and better bits. Like anywhere? Are you thinking of moving there?

A possibility yes

It's much nicer up towards Little Heath than down along Woolwich Rd. For transport links it's not as well connected as Woolwich, and if you're up towards Charlton Park it's actually quite a way back down to the station.
