To tell you EDF have DOUBLED most of our electric tariff overnight

I am so mad, we're on Economy 7 as live out in the sticks with storage heaters that charge overnight and let heat out in the day.

EDF just nonchalantly advised they are DOUBLING my overnight rate from tomorrow and adding another 20% on to the daily standing charge which is now 57p. There's a small reduction in the daytime rate but this is useless to us as the house is geared up to use most of our electric at night - around 80-85% is drawn overnight. I don't think anyone else offers E7 now so we are stuck at the mercy of EDF's insane rises.

AIBU to think people on Economy 7, oil and LPG have been completely cast adrift by this useless government? Why are energy suppliers being allowed to do this?

To put this in perspective - Shell just posted $10BILLION in profits (not revenue, profit after everything else has been paid) for the last quarter - so over just three months of the year). EDF made £1.1billion in profit last year. Trebles all round.

Actually i don't have econ 7 so not so affected, but it sounds unfair to say the least

My fuel company took 2pence off the electric daily KWH and stuck it on the gas, made no sense.

It should of been capped and shouldn't of been allowed to go up in price should of stayed the same price as before. I would report it to ofgem.

You realise its OFGEM and the government who've set the price right? Not EDF.

We're on a mix of heating oil (hot water, ancient boiler that came with the house), coal and logs for heating... No one gives a flying fuck about the massive prices on those. Our oil tank used to be 400 to fill... One tip up last year was 950!?!

Thing is I mostly get fucked off when I hear shut about saving energy - some houses are just inefficient and old Victorian drafts.. we're naturally very frugal, hearing set to 13 Deg c before it kicks in (nope not a typo), draft excluders , the bit where we could access the roof has new insulation, we stuck window seals to the panes, keep to 1 room with a fire. But a toddler doesn't want to stick in 1 room all day.

I get really annoyed when I get energy saving tips from my electricity energy supplier that states either obvious stuff or stuff we've already done. As if we're morons.

Well they've worked out that they can charge as much as the my like, and get away with it. Nobody is going to hold them to account. It's an absolute outrage.

It's a total and absolute fucking outrage, woke up in a good mood now I want to punch the shit out of EDF, GAAAAAARRRRRRHHH!!

My fixed rate ended at the end of February, and am now on standard variable E7 with EDF. Not had any notification of a price change from that which I was told about at end of February.

Has your tariff changed - such as going from a fixed deal to variable? Or were you on variable and the variable has changed significantly? Variable I expect to change a bit but not double.

This is how the price cap works on Economy 7. If you use the vast majority of your electricity overnight in theory you should be still better off than the rest of us, (and presumably were much better off over last winter) but doubling the rate does seem like a shocker.

Irrelevant - they have doubled our rates! Our electricity bill will now double.

I am not 'better of than the rest of us' as you have no idea what my circumstances are.

Please don't fall for the Gov strategy of dividing us all. We are ALL affected by this.

@Snorkers yes. We came off our fixed rate tariff in August on to the price cap and our monthly DD doubled from £55 per month to £109 per month.

That is what everyone is facing when they come off fixed deals.

Have you just come off a cheaper fix, or is that just how E7 has changed on the current price cap?

In any case, have a look at Agile Octopus. The tariff varies every half an hour according to the wholesale rates, so there is a risk that you'll sometimes pay much higher rates. But overall, it's supposed to be very cheap if you use most of your electricity at night, because that's when demand is low.

We are with Octopus and somehow ended up on a tariff which has a lower nighttime rate. They don't call it E7 though - it's something like Flexible 2. They publish the hours they charge lower rates so do offer something.

I'm with EDF on Economy 7.
My night rate has only increased by 2p per kWh. My day rate has gone down by 5p. Standing charge up by 6p.
Were you on a fixed/discounted rate up til now?

Seem to be avoiding the question of whether on a fixed tariff deal previously. Without answering this, hard to tell if you are truly being shafted or not

They do.

Very few offer E10, most offer E7. Switching is tricky at the moment though.

No not on a fixed rate previously - just their deemed tariff (so the standard one). The rate varies according to where you live. We're in the South East.

Yes i think maybe they offer them, but they aren't visible/available for new customers. I had another look at Octopus do a 'flexi' economy 7 which may be worth looking at, but I'm still mad that a company can double rates overnight.
