To feel SO confused about this

I’ll try and explain this as simply and concisely as possible. I posted briefly about it a few months ago but can’t find that post now and I didn’t go in to as much detail anyway.

I’ve got a dent in my head. It’s a vertical line around an inch deep into the skull at its deepest. it’s probably around 5 inches long. My hairdresser recently felt it and said it didn’t feel normal and that she’s felt adults with various dents and skull irregularities from fontanelles fusing and this felt much much worse. For me, it’s just ‘normal’ as I’ve had it for as long as I can remember. But it’s significant and its a serious groove into my skull. It’s very different to a typical lumpy bumpy skull

I grew up as an infant with an extremely violent parent and the fact I was a young child wasn’t a deterrent. I don’t remember a lot of things that happened as a baby/infant so I can only go by external reports about things that happened.

is it possible this dent was caused by some kind of injury caused by them and I just can’t remember it? Or is it more likely just to be one of those things that happens for no reason at all? I don’t want to seem like I’m excusing every little thing on this person but when I googled it I could only find things on google about craniosyntosis which presumably would have been picked up as a baby, and trauma causing it.

I’ve suffered from horrific migraines and I’ve sort of always wondered if deep down it has anything to do with it. The migraines started as I was growing up so I wondered if maybe my brain was rubbing off the part of the skull that is dented inwards IYSWIM

but of course it could be purely coincidental and just normal! It’s just hard when you don’t know what happened to you

Just sort of wondered if anyone knew anymore about this type of thing. TIA x

My advice would be to go to the Dr about your migraines and mention it to them.

Grapefruitsorbet456 · 31/03/2023 00:47

I actually mentioned it to a doctor but they didn’t feel it and just said most skulls have dents and lumps and it’s never perfectly round. Tbh I felt a bit fobbed off and I insisted that this is not like that- you can actually run your finger inside the groove in between the edges of skull at the edge of it- but they weren’t concerned. Maybe that means it’s nothing to be concerned about and its probably actually a good thing they weren’t worried though!

Did you go specifically about that, ask them to feel your head and get turned down?

Aquamarine1029 · 31/03/2023 01:03

I remember your original post. It certainly is very perplexing.

MissingMoominMamma · 31/03/2023 01:03

Go back and insist. I hate how Drs can make you feel like you’re fussing- it’s your body and your health!

Which part of your skull is the dent?

Turnipworkharder · 31/03/2023 01:10

My brother has a dent in his skull caused by a massive branch falling on his head as a young child.

It's shaped like a horses shoe and you can put a finger in the ridge and move around the shape.

is it some thing like that you're describing OP

I have an indentation in my forehead, which I think was caused by getting hit with a hockey stick (accidentally!) at school. It's a couple of inches long, not that wide but there's a definite 'channel' and it becomes quite noticeable if I get too skinny (not a stealth boast, am unwell).

Skulls are very hardy things though, they are there to protect our brains, after all. Any dents we have are on the surface of the bone though, it's not like a car panel where it comes through to the other side.

Please investigate your migraines though, it's certainly possible they may be related to a previous injury but they can also be caused by past psychological trauma and it sounds like you've dealt with a lot of this (and I'm sorry you have had to). Whatever the cause, they are hideous and you shouldn't have to suffer. There are plenty of solutions out there and there should be one that works for you.

I have a similar dent across my forehead. It was caused when I tipped forward and hit my head on a coffee table when I was 6 months old. Apparently the skull is so soft at that age that indents can remain. I'm so self-conscious about mine that I have Botox to try and mask it. Botox has helped with migraines too.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 31/03/2023 01:35

Could you go back and ask to be referred for an MRI scan with regard to the migraines? Might take a couple of months though.

Maybe but I honestly don’t know for sure. It sort of sounds like it though. I can’t see it because it runs from the crown of my head vertically downwards. I can’t take a photo either because of my hair covering it unfortunately. I know lots of people have a slight groove where their sagital suture was but this is nothing like that. It’s a straight line downwards and not just a small dent- at it’s deepest it’s about an inch into the skull. You can feel the edges of the skull. If I put my hair into a middle parting all the way to the back of my head you can actually feel the skull go in when you run your finger down it. Then you realise how deep it is when you feel the edge of the skull to the side of the groove

an inch deep sound significant

GayforMoleman · 01/04/2023 01:35

I don’t have a dent, but a large bump on one side of my forehead. Apparently from a childhood "accident" I have no memory of (I was abused as a child as far back as I can remember, so wouldn't be surprised if it's as a result of that but I was too little to recall), but it's pretty big. Hasn't caused me any physical problems, I’m just sick of seeing it in the mirror and in photos.
