I’m due 16th August up likely to be induced around the 4th August would my child be very young in their school year?

Also, I forgot you start school at 4 over here. We start at 5 in Aus so I guess that gives them the extra time. They do Pre school though, which I assume is similar to reception.
My son just finished year 6 in Aus and has come in half way through year 8 and they’ve covered really similar stuff so I’m not sure why they start a year earlier anyway.

Well the odd thing here is that children start school at age 4 usually. However the compulsory school starting age is actually the term after they turn 5. Not sure why/how that came to be that way.

Interesting you have that opinion when the starting age in Australia is a lot more relaxed than it is in the UK. My sis had led me to believe it was a more enlightened system obviously you can’t account for everyone have an open mind!

It’s not my opinion - I couldn’t care less when kids start school, but surely the whole reason for keeping them back is because the parent thinks they can’t do the work of the year they should be in? Why else would you keep them back?
Anyway, it doesn’t matter, people will do what they wish and it doesn’t really affect any of the other kids if there are a few who are held back every year.

FlightOwl · 30/03/2023 23:08

I think the difference is more pronounced at younger ages, and among boys than girls, especially with sports.

Oh weird! So why do they start school at 4 then?

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 30/03/2023 23:10

DDs birthday is 6th august and I'm aware of one other who is younger than her. So I'd imagine your child will be one of the youngest, yes.

No idea. I think quite a few parents don’t realise that.

DS is 8/8 and only 2 younger than him in his year at primary

It’s not about the work - it’s the social and emotional well being that’s often the concern - they are often very immature - it doesn’t mean they lack intelligence or won’t learn social skills and mature - they just take a bit longer to catch up. But the journey is harder when they are forced to take it before they are ready.

mishmased · 30/03/2023 23:30

Mine was born on early August and 1 younger. One of the kids in his class is 19 months older than him and about 4 are 18 months older out of a class of 22.

Dartsplayer · 30/03/2023 23:31

DS is 20th Aug. He wasnt the youngest at primary or secondary

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 30/03/2023 23:31

My birthday is 31st August, I wasn't the youngest in the year at secondary school!

DS1 is 21st August, iirc he had 2 younger than him.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 30/03/2023 23:32

You’d be better off asking your midwife to predict than us. FWIW I have a late August baby who is fine and doing well. He’s not the youngest.

AlwaysLatte · 30/03/2023 23:44

They will be very young, I don't think it's evenly likely across all the months as some people actively try to avoid having a late summer born (or choose it, due to being a teacher, eg).

MrsJ90 · 30/03/2023 23:59

I have an Aug born DS he's due to start school in sept 2024 but I'm deferring his entry till sept 2025. No reason other than he's summer born . He'll go into reception not Yr1. It's also really common in our area too.

FrenchandSaunders · 31/03/2023 08:17

Try not to get too hung up on this OP, it really won’t matter. Most of them find their way.

There was a girl in my DCs class who was a couple of days early and ended up being born end of August ….. her mum would still refer to it at secondary school aged 15/16 😳

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 31/03/2023 19:07

Hankunamatata · 30/03/2023 22:42

Some authorities will let you defer. Which I would strongly encourage from personal experience as summer born tend to have a harder time in primary

As a summer birthday myself and with a summer born child I can say that it had no negative effect on either of us, my summer born child is over 18 now so I can state that for sure

Al that tells is that anecdata is meaningless, thechild hasnt even been born never mind got to school application age

IglesiasPiggl · 31/03/2023 19:12

Well yes of course they will be. Cut off date is 31st of August.

My birthday is first week in August and I can never remember it being a problem! Son had two friends at secondary school who were both born 30 th August Academically they have both done really well and have great careers .The only down side for the boys being the last to legally drive and drink alcohol .

Daffodilwoman · 31/03/2023 19:34

My friends ds was born 31st August. It has never seemed to hold them back.
Ds was born in May and there weren’t that many younger than him in his class.

EsmeSusanOgg · 31/03/2023 19:59

Depends on the year. There are 7 kids with August birthdays and 5 with July birthdays in my son's class.
