To ask for more than the advertised salary?

Hi,

I have just been invited to an interview for what seems like a great job. Salary in the advert was a bit lower than I’d like.

In invitation the hiring manager has asked “what are your salary expectations?”. I was hoping this might come in during the interview after I’d built up a bit of a rapport and I could ask for a bit more.

Would they place a black mark by my name if I asked for more than advertised at this stage?

Thanks

I think you should negotiate about this once you've been offered the role. Good luck!

Has it given a range? Or just one set salary?

bonus?
benefits?

AlexaFeedMyKids · 30/03/2023 10:03

Possibly wouldn't interview you if it was above their range. But if you wouldnt take the job at the lower salary anyway then you have nothing to lose. Is it a question where you could answer by saying "could we discuss this at interview if possible please?"

My husband always approaches this question differently and asks them what their range is. Lots of women will ask for less than they're worth, lots of men will go for broke and ask for more. Hit the ball back at them. Then ask for the top of their range.

I would probably blurb something about needing to understand the role, team and company more before forming my salary expectations. ie after interview

Villssev · 30/03/2023 10:06

How does it compare with your current salary?

Villssev · 30/03/2023 10:08

Is this the job you posted about having terrible glassdoor reviews?

Frabbits · 30/03/2023 10:08

If they have asked you directly at this stage just be honest. If they aren't prepared to offer what you want, why waste everyone's time?

Iimp · 30/03/2023 10:14

The advertised salary is a bit higher than my current salary (£5k). But it sounds like a brilliant job. They do mention the possibility of bonuses in the job description.

@Villssev This is a new one. Pulled out of that one. The reviews were just so bad….
