How to store and reheat leftover Chinese takeaway

bathtimeducks · 29/03/2023 20:55

Wondering if anyone knows the best way to store and then tomorrow reheat leftover Chinese takeaway food.

Need to be careful as I am pregnant.

It is chicken in a sauce and some egg fried rice.

Thanks

The same way you store and reheat any food usually.

ShirleyPhallus · 29/03/2023 20:56

I tend to leave it on the side, forget about it until the morning and then eat it cold (usually hungover). Delightful.

The real answer is to cool it down as quickly as poss, refrigerate then heat thoroughly. Lots of people are weird about reheating rice though so it’s up to you as to whether you take the risk (I would but not everyone would)

LividNC · 29/03/2023 20:57

Fridge it then nuke it, either in a pan or in the microwave. Not just warm, properly bubbling all the way through.

powershowerforanhour · 29/03/2023 20:58

Wait till it cools, put it in the fridge (I assume that since you are pregnant you will be sober enough to remember to do this by the time it cools), nuke it in the microwave and consume.

Oldbutwiser · 29/03/2023 20:58

Cool it and put it in the fridge in plastic containers. When you reheat tomorrow reheat in covered containers in the microwave until its as hot as you can possibly get it ,not just warm. I usually cook it on high for about 10 minutes ,piping hot.

Itsgottobeme · 29/03/2023 21:00

Like you would other food

CandleInTheStorm · 29/03/2023 21:00

You just need to ensure you cool it as quickly as possible, refrigerate, then reheat to minimum of 75 degrees.

Reheating rice is fine as long as its not been left at room temperature for too long for any spores to germinate and for bacteria to multiply and release toxins (that's the danger) as these aren't killed via cooking. Just be mindful that the takeaway may have already precooked the rice and reheated it to order.

I always wonder if people who are worried about reheated rice ever have rice dishes when eating out

Take away rice has already been cooked and reheated when it arrives at your house though… so it’s a second reheating. (I still do it though).

@ShirleyPhallus you are my hero!

Reheating? Storing? Left over Chinese is always at its best having been left on the kitchen counter overnight and eaten cold for breakfast the following morning

MrsPnut · 29/03/2023 21:06

In the fridge as soon as we’ve finished eating and reheated in a bowl for at least 5 minutes.
I did this even when I was having chemo because Chinese leftovers are my absolute favourite.

Same here. Like you can't make egg fried rice with freshly cooked rice. That's wrong😁

SnackSizeRaisin · 29/03/2023 21:08

It's not reheating rice that's the problem, it's failing to cool it quickly enough after it's been cooked.

If it's left warm for a while then bacteria in it may produce toxins. These toxins can't be killed by heating so there's no way to make it safe again.

So.if you're going to eat it the next day it doesn't matter if you eat it straight from the fridge, or heat it. The important thing is to cool it quickly by putting in the fridge straight away after your meal.

Schmutter · 29/03/2023 21:11

We just stick it in the fridge then microwave it.

slowquickstep · 29/03/2023 21:32

I will eat re heated takeaway rice now but when i was pregnant it gave me food poisoning, The midwife read me the riot act for eating it. i really wouldn't chance it if i were you.

It’s only dangerous to reheat rice if it was left out for long and not refrigerated

ItsBeginningToScabOverNow · 29/03/2023 21:35

Do you genuinely not know how to do this?

Surely you’ve had some experience of refrigerating food, and reheating it?

TEN MINUTES in a microwave?! It will have gone all weird and microwave crispy burnt

whoruntheworldgirls · 29/03/2023 22:21

Clingfilm, fridge then when wanted nuke in the microwave, i haven't been ill yet and i always do this as cant finish a whole portion. I have my leftovers for lunch the next day, wouldn't leave out much longer.

MummyJ12 · 29/03/2023 22:24

Do yourself a favour and throw the rice. It’ll be days old already and will have already been chilled and reheated as it’s egg fried rice and it’s how they make it. The rest, put it in the fridge and eat it in the next day after throughly reheating. Don’t keep it any longer. If you’re microwaving make sure it’s piping throughout with no cold spots.

SarahAndQuack · 29/03/2023 22:27

I am not in the least fussy about most food (I ignore use-by dates, etc.), but honestly, I would not choose to eat leftover takeaway rice while pregnant. Life is short; rice is cheap. Chuck it and have something else.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 29/03/2023 22:30

Honestly OP dont do this, I found I got ill from a few things when I was pregnant that I wouldnt normally, my immune system was really low and it just wouldnt be worth it.

Fried rice especially has already been cooked, cooled, reheated and cooled. Its against all food safety advice to reheat it a third time.

Lots of people are fine doing this and dont have a problem...until they do at some point.

Just buy less or share it with someone

gogohmm · 29/03/2023 22:32

Stick in fridge (ideally, sometimes it gets left out) reheat in microwave (ideally next day, 5 days was pushing it) until piping hot
