To be utterly sick of being cold?

Feels like months since I've been properly warm. The flat I've moved to is constantly freezing unless i have the heating on 20+ (which i can't afford!) It's a corner flat and backs onto fields so feels very exposed. Also isn't very well insulated but it's rented so not much i can do about that. (I have done what i can with door insulation and curtains and such) I'm just so sick of it, sick of huddling under blankets with my heat pack. I don't even want it to be hot, just not so cold and damp all of the time!

Thermal top, ooodie and cashmere socks? I WFH all day with no heating on and these keep me warm all day.

RoddyStJames · 28/03/2023 20:42

Is a dehumidifier an option? Damp air is colder, and takes longer to heat. If you were able to suck the moisture out it would be warmer and are less to heat.

Am with you OP, permanently cold as scared of sky high heating bills and feels like it’s been going on forever, can wrap up as much as possible but can’t use computer with gloves on - I work from home - so hands always cold and so is face, the air indoors is cold and there’s no way round that, so sick of it

I have all of those things. I'm just fed up of needing them.

I feel your pain. Many years ago I was in a poorly insulated rental and I was absolutely frozen.

Andante57 · 28/03/2023 20:49

I agree op.
However March is nearly over - I just hope the weather warms up soon yesterday we had a lovely spring day with sunshine but today it’s back to cold, wet and windy.

It's not damp inside, thank goodness. No problems with condensation or anything. Just cold. The heat just doesn't stay unless I have the heating on!

Urgh it's miserable. Remember those days well. We used a portable gas bottle heater in one room and made it so toasty (remember to have carbon monoxide monitor though)

That's exactly it - I wear plenty of layers and use blankets but i'm sick of NEEDING them. And even then, my hands and face are always freezing.

@PinkLemonadee how about an eco oil radiator? I have one for my daughters room, cheap to run and keeps her large drafty room toasty warm.

You could have that in the lounge then an electric blanket on the bed??

MarchMadness23 · 28/03/2023 21:05

It shouldn't be long now until we get some decent weather. It was a nice day here yesterday & I felt so much happier for a bit of sun & blue sky.

can you splurge a bit this coming weekend? Now that the winter is almost over. Something to look forward to??

Saz12 · 28/03/2023 21:25

OP, not much winter left now. Some proper warmth in the sunlight.

Squidlette · 28/03/2023 21:42

I have reynauds. This year is the worst it's ever been. All the layers in the world won't help, once I'm cold. Burned my finger on the hob tonight so ran it under the cold tap. 1 finger. 6 of them then went white, so I ended up cooking without being able to hold anything properly.

tatteddear · 29/03/2023 07:08

I hear you op. We recently got a smart meter and it's genuinely terrifying me. As a result we have discovered that we simply can't have the heating on for more than an hour a day. Just no way we can afford it. Dd1 has had proper flu this week and the rest of us have felt pretty rubbish. I took to getting in bed with her and the Dogs in the day time to keep us warm as it has been about 8 degrees in our house and no amount of Oodies, socks and bloody hats were touching it especially when ill. Layering up is all very well but why the hell should we have to whilst the energy companies just get richer? It's no way to live. I grew up in a house with no heating-we had fires and an ineffective range-and it was permanently cold except in the kitchen-I hate feeling like that again.
Two years ago my gas bill was £87 a month. Our smart meter is now showing £13 plus a day. (We are a family of six and our house is awkward to heat and keep warm due to the layout).

LlynTegid · 29/03/2023 07:24

You may find if you have access to one, a regular sauna in winter does help, even if it is only one hour a week. I had a flat at one point which was difficult to keep warm, and I found it helped a great deal.

Have a look at turtle dove gloves. Then go on Amazon and get the five pairs for a tenner option.

Our office is Baltic. I’ve got a heated blanket but these gloves are a lifesaver for my freaky fingers.

MagpiePi · 29/03/2023 07:32

I use fingerless gloves for wfh. They are a cheap pair of ordinary fleece gloves (£1 from Decathlon) that I cut the ends of the fingers off.

TarasHarp55 · 29/03/2023 07:36

It wouldn't be so bad if we were "all in this together" but we can rest assured our wonderful caring government ministers are warm in their homes.Wouldnt be surprised if they managed to claim extra heating allowance on their expenses.

SquashPenguin · 29/03/2023 07:42

We found an oil radiator to be surprisingly inexpensive to run this winter. We used it a lot to warm our living room up when we didn’t want to have the heating on all day (except for when it was VERY cold) and was pointless heating the whole house. My partner uses it in his office when he works from home and stays nice and toasty! Once they’ve heated up their running costs are low, so it’s good for having on for long periods of time.

PinkLemonadee · 29/03/2023 19:46

I feel for everyone who is in the same boat. Went to bed at 9pm last night because I was so cold, and had two quilts and my hot water bottle. I'm genuinely worried about next winter - hopefully we get help again because without it I have no idea how I'm going to manage! I have a chronic health condition too and the cold is making me feel so much worse. Wearing layers only goes so far when the air inside is really cold!

Can you please send me a link to the 5 pairs for £10 gloves on Amazon

blueandsad · 09/04/2024 19:43

Electric heating is 3 x more expensive than gas heating ( per therm ) ... whichever way , it's expensive ... just that sometimes it is cheaper to put on the gch than to use electric heaters in one room only
