Do you spend money every day?

Had this discussion recently with a friend. Excluding direct debits that come out of your account, do you spend money on something every day? This includes shopping online or in store, transport, petrol etc. I definitely do, if not every day then 6 days a week.

For example, yesterday I paid for my commute on the tube, then got a coffee on the way home and picked up some cat food. Today I’ll also spend on the tube, and am then going for a drink tonight with friends so will spend on that. Tomorrow I know I need to buy a birthday present. And on and on…

I suppose if you do a big shop on the weekend then you wouldn’t need to buy as much food during the week, but surely you’ll still need to pick up odds and ends? Just curious really.

Yes, and I tend to shop daily rather than weekly, then there’s fuel, kids want stuff, I want stuff.

BunnyMummy91 · 28/03/2023 16:10

Yeah I'm like you we do a big shop on payday but still find myself having to buy stuff every time I go into a shop (working in one doesn't help) 🤣 feel like I'm always buying something! Probably plenty of things that aren't necessary 😅

MarissaG · 28/03/2023 16:11

No, definitely not. But I WFH, does a gym membership count though?

No I don't; but I think I'm odd unusual among my friends and family tbh.

PuttingDownRoots · 28/03/2023 16:13

No.
Today I did food shopping, and got money out to pay for a Cubs trip.
Didn't spend anything yesterday, no plans to spend Wednesday or Thursday.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 28/03/2023 16:13

Money goes out of my account most days - bills, clubs, subscriptions etc.

But actual spending - no. We do a food shop once a week. Teenage DCs get their pocket money once a month.

DH & I have about £100 a month fun money each and I tend to spend that once in the month then it is gone.

Ragwort · 28/03/2023 16:14

Mostly .. but I never shop online and prefer to buy food shopping every couple of days ... and I work (in retail!) in town so am surrounded by shops but I don't buy frivolously. Only buy clothes from charity shops and have a coffee out maybe once a week? Haven't actually bought anything today ... but yesterday bought some stamps and a few food bits for the next couple of days.

astro7grass · 28/03/2023 16:15

Yep

purplecorkheart · 28/03/2023 16:16

No not everyday. I now work from home a few days a week I try not to spend anything on these days, Equally I try not to spend anything on Saturdays that I have nothing on.

SocksAndTheCity · 28/03/2023 16:18

Maybe not every single day, but almost. I had an online grocery shop yesterday and today I have two bus fares as I'm going to the cinema and I need to buy milk on the way back.

I don't think I need anything tomorrow or Thursday, though 🤔

Zhougzhoug · 28/03/2023 16:19

If wfh it's 50-50 (maybe a couple of bits from the Co Op on the way back from school run etc), if working in an office 100% always yes, will just somehow burn through £10-30 absolutely every day without fail.

I order something online most weeks but usually just boring household bits, maybe once a month it will be something fun clothes or makeup.

Frazzlefrazle · 28/03/2023 16:20

Yes I do tend too. Little bits to add to dinner or children needing something. I'm trying to not but there is always something that pops up. No spend today though.

TokyoSushi · 28/03/2023 16:20

Pretty much!

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 28/03/2023 16:24

There'll be a few days here and there where nothing gets spent.

Precipice · 28/03/2023 16:25

No, not every day, but most days. I don't drive and I live in a flatshare with a shared fridge and freezer, so my shopping is done in bits and pieces.

I've actually taken to tracking my spending in Excel, so I can tell you that in March, I've so far spent money on 17 days. In February, I spent money on 19 or 20 days (not sure which day I got my hair cut on!)

I don't think it really matters. If you go to Lidl on Monday and to Waitrose on Tuesday, it's no different than if you'd gone to both Lidl and Waitrose on Monday. Same if you go to Sainburys two days back-to-back rather than buying everything on the first day. It doesn't suggest spending more money.

Brieandme · 28/03/2023 16:25

I don't, but only because my work days can sometimes be so busy that I really don't have time to - unless I'm stopping for petrol. I take my food with me to work because there isn't much available nearby.

I don't think it makes a difference though, I still spend plenty on the other days where I'm consciously doing shopping!

Ace56 · 28/03/2023 16:26

I agree actually that on the days I wfh it’s much easier to not spend! Even though when I go to the office I’ll take a lunch etc, I still end up getting something on the way home usually or topping up the grocery shop.

Not every day but not far off.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 28/03/2023 16:28

BP o food shop comes Sunday. Once a month for petrol

Comedycook · 28/03/2023 16:29

Yes but I do really try to have no spend days... unfortunately something inevitably comes up.. a school trip, petrol runs out, need a couple of things from the supermarket.

Glitterybee · 28/03/2023 16:32

Yes everyday…. It never stops

mynewname25 · 28/03/2023 16:34

I probably used to, if not every day then almost but since January I have really been trying to cut back. Taking food and drinks into work from home and being conscious of not spending unless I really need to.

deplorabelle · 28/03/2023 16:37

No I shop once a week and try to avoid top up shops of any kind. It's not very easy to stick to but it keeps the costs down so I usually manage it 2-4 weeks a month.

DH and I both WFH full time and we drive an EV which is charged at home except for long journeys. I can go a week without setting foot in a shop (just my regular trek round lidl looking increasingly like a bag lady)

Plenty goes out on other things regularly including charity donation but in person spending is infrequent.

Allmyplantsdie · 28/03/2023 16:38

No. I probably spend some money 2 possibly 3 days a week
