Uniform staying on after school?

MissJ87 · 28/03/2023 12:11

need other Mums advice Here, as i dont think I'm being unreasonable. Two daughters, 15 and 16, one happily stays in Her uniform after school, the other doesnt like to. Ive recently noticed how much money ive saved on electricity by doing half the washing i normally would, if they both changed. Is it that unreasonable for me to insist they both stay in uniform after school? To have Her tell it i'm made out to be the devil. Money is tight right now, and any money i can save, i will. Its not like it isnt a nice uniform, smart white shirt, nice tie. Ie got so much to do around the house, an extra pile of washing isnt a nice sight lol.

Are your kids happy staying in uniform? does it save you time and money also?

Thanks in advance.

Why not suggest if they want to get changed after school it's into pjs not another outfit?

MadeForThis · 28/03/2023 12:18

Mine always stay in their uniform unless they are going out to a club. Or pyjamas.

Caiti19 · 28/03/2023 12:18

So is the one who changes selecting a different outfit to change into every evening? If so, that's the problem. I completely understand wanting to get the uniform off and wanting to get into comfy lounge clothes - but those comfy lounge clothes are being worn for a few hours of an evening and can be worn for 3 evenings before going into the laundry surely?

Theturtlethatcried · 28/03/2023 12:23

I change into comfy clothes at home so I certainly wouldn’t stop my children doing it. Who wants to wear a collared shirt to lounge around in?! I think expecting them to keep uniform on at home is unreasonable.

But I wouldn’t be washing a whole outfit that’s worn for a couple of hours after school either - it’s perfectly fine to rewear for a few days.

Believeitornot · 28/03/2023 12:25

Why are you washing outfits only worn 3.30-bedtime?

Itsbytheby · 28/03/2023 12:26

I don't know, if they aren't comfortable it's a bit unreasonable requiring them not to change. I wouldn't fancy being in tights and a shirt when I am home. A better solution is to encourage them to not put their comfy/ after school clothes in the wash after one day as they are presumably only wearing them a couple of hours

My two sometimes change, sometimes don't. If they do it's most often into comfy clothes, PJs, joggers, Oodie, that sort of thing. They can wear that almost all week (spills etc aside).

MeinKraft · 28/03/2023 12:27

DS wears uniform after school, I've tried to coax him out of it but he's happy not to bother so now I just leave it. But I wouldn't stop him getting into his comfies if he wanted to. As others have said though lounge clothes can be worn for a week few days without washing.

THNG5 · 28/03/2023 12:27

My 3 year old has started changing out of her nursery clothes when she gets home. I just don't wash her after nursery clothes each time. She's only been wearing them for 3 hours max. They just get folded up and back in the draw!

dietcokelime · 28/03/2023 12:28

I wouldn't fancy staying in a smart white shirt and tie all evening when trying to relax / unwind! Can't they get into pjs like PP said that would be work anyway?

Itsnotyourbusiness · 28/03/2023 12:28

Soon as through the door uniforms are off and in the wash with dettol and dc bathed /showered

NuffSaidSam · 28/03/2023 12:28

I think you need to reduce the amount you're washing the clothes rather than banning her from being comfortable in her own home. Do you sit around the house in a smart white shirt and a tie?! I wouldn't want to.

Meandfour · 28/03/2023 12:29

YABU. I don’t understand your comment about it being a “nice” uniform… I cannot think of anything more uncomfortable than spending all evening sat in a shirt and tie.

Whatdoesitmatterif · 28/03/2023 12:29

I think it's a bit controlling to tell a teenager they have to wear their school uniform all evenings, I'd hate it personally and want to put something comfortable on personally

Talipesmum · 28/03/2023 12:30

Fine to stay in uniform or get changed but it shouldn’t mean a change to the laundry! If they’re wearing something for a few hours over the evening it should go back in the drawers / wardrobe for the next day rather than straight into the wash, unless something spilt on it.

StonwEd · 28/03/2023 12:30

Would find this really odd. I don't even dress that smartly for work and it's still into comfies the I'm home. All dc have always done the same.

FlounderingFruitcake · 28/03/2023 12:31

School uniforms are pretty formal, fair enough she doesn’t want to relax in tights, smart shirt, blazer etc. Presuming she’s well past the age of getting her tea down her front there’s no need to wash something that’s been worn from 4-10pm ish. She can change into the same comfy clothes each day when she gets in and put it in the wash on Friday. Or go straight into PJs.

Oysterbabe · 28/03/2023 12:31

Is that much extra washing really? Maybe a couple of extra outfits a week?

Annonnimouse · 28/03/2023 12:31

I’m a germaphobe so would want them to get changed out of school uniform but agree with Pp either into pjs or one outfit that they wear between home time and bedtime and they fold and re wear once or twice. If they are teens they should’ve get too messy

DappledThings · 28/03/2023 12:32

Never took my uniform off till bedtime or an activity and DC are the same. If they really wanted to start getting changed when they're older I would find it a bit irritating but as long as they are responsible for their own laundry that's fine.

Never understood the need to strip as soon as you get through the door myself.

Why all the disinfecting?

Why all the disinfecting?

Yeah, that's a pretty weird and obsessive way to live.

Cryingbutstilltrying · 28/03/2023 12:34

Uniform isn’t that comfy.
No need to wash the new outfit daily though.
Aside from the 2 days a week mine change into activity uniform, the other 3 days they wear the same thing, unless they drop food down it. Fresh shirt for school daily but the rest of that lasts at least a couple of days. So a shirt and underwear daily, then other things about 2 a week. Really not that much to wash. Unless we’re talking muddy primary kids there’s no need for all this washing!

Nice to know others also do this. Is it something you push as a rule? Do you also notice the dramatic reduction in washing as I?

Uniform isn’t that comfy.
Nor is significantly uncomfy!

mynameiscalypso · 28/03/2023 12:36

Wouldn't it save more money if they changed and you didn't have to wash school uniform as often?
