To ask for positive dental surgery stories

Posting for traffic, I have dental surgery this week for multiple extractions, fillings and cleaning. I’m really scared of the dentist so going under general anaesthetic. I’ve never had a dental procedure in my life.

I was just wondering if any of you have positive/normal experiences from getting things done? 🤞🏻

Every time it’s brought up in conversation someone tells me an absolute horror story about infections and damages😭Its really not helping my fear, people keep saying it’s going to “be alright” and then going “my aunties cats brother lost all their teeth after theirs and couldn’t move their face for 6 month!” 😳

Hi - I had my tooth extracted 2 years ago (not under GA) and it was really easy and I didn't really need pain medication afterwards. I was very careful to listen to the instructions so ate soft foods for a couple of days and didn't use a straw. Also they said to rinse mouth with salt water several times a day after the first 24 hours. I did this religiously but literally poured it into my mouth and moved my head around as I didn't want to dislodge the clot by sucking at all. It worked fine and I had no infections etc.

I’ve had both my wisdom teeth out and it was fine; it hurt and I took painkillers for About a week but no infections or unexpected complications. I followed the advice about salt water and soft food; it wasn’t the most fun few days but equally it wasn’t awful.

I had a tooth out last year, had to have it done at the hospital as it was tricky. Was absolutely shitting it beforehand but the staff were so lovely to me. I saw a thing on Tik tok about drinking pineapple juice and it reducing pain and inflammation, so I drank LOADS in the couple of days before hand, and I was fine afterwards, minimal pain and very little swelling, although the long acting ibruprofen probably helped as well!

I had all my wisdom teeth out in one go under GA, apart from the obvious pain for a few days I had no difficulties. Try to make sure you are able to do very little for a couple of days afterwards to give yourself time to recover and keep topped up with painkillers. Swill with salty water twice a day, gross but effective at stopping infection.

I had a wisdom tooth taken out when second trimester pregnant
So only local
Numbing injection and paracetamol

I could feel dentist tugging and pulling as it was impacted wisdom tooth (about as argh an extraction as you can get)

It was fine, I sang a little song in my head and mentally planned the next weeks worth of meals to cook...

Bit throbbing for 30 hours afterwards but took my paracetamol 8 a day for two days and that was on minimal pain killers being preg
You can do this

It's better than the alternative of having tooth pain which is not fun!!

I've never gone under general anaesthetic for dental wok, but have had numerous fillings and an extraction. No issues after the extraction. As previous poster said, follow any instructions given and you should be fine. I understand you must be really nervous though!

Have you been having issues with your teeth? If so, you'll probably feel much better once it's all over and dealt with and you can move forward and hopefully never need all this work again.

Tiani4 · 27/03/2023 14:41

Oooh a GA.., you won't feel any of it then...

Good luck OP

Just get through it... stick up in Ive real and smoothies for a couple days 😄

Tiani4 · 27/03/2023 14:42

*stock up on icecream and smoothies I meant

I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed under general aesthetic as it was quite complicated (roots of the tooth were curved so was a tricky extraction, and my jaw bone had started to grow around it)

Honestly it was the best thing ever! Before I had near constant infections and pain.

I remember the recovery afterwards was totally fine for a couple of days, then a bit achey almost from about day 3 onwards but nothing standard pain killers couldn't handle. No issues with dry socket or anything like that, honestly it was great.

My surgeon recommended 5 days of recovery so I took a week off work for it but I didn't need to really it was just nice to spend time relaxing!

I had a botched lumbar puncture a few years ago that left me terrified of similar procedures and for some reason my brain conflated that with dentists. I had HG and destroyed my teeth and needed a filling. They had to do a temporary one because my gums wouldn’t stop bleeding. After the pregnancy, I needed it replacing with a permanent filling and I was terrified. She gave me the highest dose of anaesthetic but I could still feel a lot and she said it was really close to the nerve. She was so unbelievably patient with me, it took about three hours in total but I didn’t get any actual pain. She knew exactly what she was doing. Even without the anaesthetic being enough, she was so precise and careful that it was honestly fine. Everything that could’ve gone wrong went wrong and it was still so completely fine.

You’ll be fine.

I have 7 implants in total, done under local anaesthetic - so that’s extraction, drilling into the jaw bone and screwing in implants (not in one go).
A few things to note:

  1. When the anaesthetic wears off, there will be pain for a few days - on the extraction site, but also in the jaw, cheek, even lips. It is manageable with Nurofen, but prepare a few packs
  2. Follow the cleaning and care advice to the letter. Cold liquid foods at first, then yogurt and mash etc
  3. Plan so that you don’t have to open your mouth too much (eating, speaking, even laughing can hurt)

The pain is totally manageable but it’s a constant dull presence for a few days. It passes, and you’ll be totally fine - pop painkillers and watch TV for the distraction.

Thank you so much everyone I really appreciate it! Im definitely prepared for the average amount of pain and swelling but the big fear is things not going according to plan

I have been having issues with my teeth, the extractions are on broken ones and they get abscesses a lot which is so painful, hopefully this should stop me getting them 🤞🏻

I've had two pretty big surgeries, but thanks to GA, I knew nothing about them😄 Just keep up with the painkillers (take them on schedule even if it's not sore at that moment) and you'll be absolutely fine. I had no pain at any stage after the surgeries (plenty before, though!)
