I moved to a new flat in 2009 - got my first ever home internet connection - was late to the party lol - a laptop and printer. I moved to a new flat again in 2016 and again got a new laptop, internet connection and brand new printer. Looking at the printer now I bought in 2016, it's occurred to me I've never used it! I suppose I only got one in 2016 as I'd got one in 2009 and maybe considered it part of the 'tradition' of moving into a new place.

I've been thinking for a while actually, is it just me or is it that people don't seem to use laptops as much as they did in 2009? Now it seems everyone is on their Smartphone 24/7.

Definitely use a laptop, mainly because I WFH but it's much easier (in my opinion) to do online shopping, look for holidays etc on a bigger screen.... maybe it's my eyesight that's the problem 😬

You can also use whatsapp on your laptop

My work have gone hybrid and 100% desk share. Everyone has a laptop and workstations are screens and keyboards. I have a workstation in the house I use when not traveling. Personally I could get by with a tablet for all I use it for but I touch type and far prefer the laptop for comfort. I’ve had it 7 years now (MB Air) and will likely change to iPad with keypad next time around. I have a printer/scanner at home and it’s used enough to justify its continuing existence

Not if you're a student or need to write. Sure mobiles are fine for checking emails or texting or googling (or Mumsnet), but not if you need to do proper writing or work. I use a desktop iMac - couldn't work without it, and my A level daughter takes her laptop everywhere.

@RovioNicecream I don’t have a laptop but we have two in the house, both my OHs for work. I see people at the gym cafe on laptops working. I don’t use one at work, use PCs when we utilise a computer. I think with the introduction of tablets laptop use probably went down, and with gaming on the rise the use of PCs has gone up again. But they are definitely still popular.
I would love a PC again

Someone on here said once that printers should be taken out on the back concrete and smashed up with a hammer. 😂

budgiegirl · 27/03/2023 14:25

We 5 laptops on our house (family of 5), and we all use them everyday. I'm self employed, so use mine for that, but also for personal use as I prefer to browse on a larger screen than my phone. We have a printer, needed for my business, but we also use that a fair bit for teenagers homework, printing for my cub pack etc.

smooththecat · 27/03/2023 14:26

To answer the question, I still have a laptop. Ideally I’d have a desktop and then possibly a less high-spec laptop, but for now I need a MacBook. I can really work otherwise.

smooththecat · 27/03/2023 14:29

I don’t have a printer and now it’s a problem because I don’t have an office where I can print stuff out and the world has not come up with a solution where I can print and get the pages mailed to myself. In fact, the main reason to have an office is that they have a printer that costs £££££ and therefore is decent and can avoid being taken out on the back concrete with the hammer.

Isthatarealname · 27/03/2023 14:35

I would have thought with Covid and WFH its quite the opposite. I've been working from laptops for years but in the last 3 years everyone I know who worked in the office from a PC has a laptop now.

mamabear715 · 27/03/2023 14:38

Concrete & hammers are FAR too kind for printers.

SupplyIsLimited · 27/03/2023 14:44

The phone is great for idle browsing, visiting my usual time-killer sites, apps, and anything on the go, but if I need to write anything (which I do, daily), send more than a short texts, shop online, etc., I much prefer my laptop. I love that it's portable, too, so I can easily move wherever is best for the time of day or the task at hand.

I also have a Fire tablet that I use almost exclusively for reading photo-heavy books and magazines. It can browse, as well, but it's not nearly as comfortable or convenient to use as the smartphone.

Both myself and my DH have a laptop each for work and work mobile phones each, we have a desktop for CCTV, games, general home stuff and a desktop just for virtual reality headset.
I also have a laptop and kindle for my own bits and reading. Plus we have a colour laser printer there cheaper in the long run than ink don't dry out and last for years with the toner that come with them.

MenopauseSucks · 27/03/2023 14:46

I have a laptop & a printer. My trusty desktop sadly died a couple of years ago & it was cheaper to get a laptop.

My printer/copier/scanner gets massive amount of use!
I took over my mother's affairs about 10 years ago & have had to send a lot of letters & photocopied documents on her behalf.
I also send scanned documents via email as well.
Am still needing it now I'm dealing with her estate.

Leftbutcameback · 27/03/2023 14:58

I have a laptop (personal) but it’s so slow it’s impossible to use. I print from my iPad instead - didn’t have a printer for a while but I have a very small one now which I just get out when I need it. The airdrop printing works surprisingly well!

BrieAndChilli · 27/03/2023 15:08

We have a desktop PC at home- teen gamers use it a lot!
DH and I both have laptops provided by work. 2 older Teens have laptops for school work so they dont have to fight over the computer.
We all have smartphones and DH and I both have ipads too. We have also replaced our printer.

All of the devices get used a lot for various things. We both volunteer with scouts so are often printing out things for use at meetings and kids often print out things for school.

Ponderingwindow · 27/03/2023 15:33

i thought all workplaces phased out tabletop pcs by 2005.

I still use a personal laptop, but not as much as I used to. I do some design things and control some external devices that a tablet just can’t handle . I actually need a souped-up gaming laptop to be able to handle it.
