To not want 7 wheelie bins

Article in DM saying some councils are going to expect people to have as many as 7 bins. Already got three which is just about manageable. But the DM can always be relied on to give folk something to froth about. Especially if they have nothing better to do. And a lot of car parks and supermarkets have removed their recycling bins which is a pain.

We could easily have up to seven bins - we have three large bins, one for general waste, one for recycling cardboard and metals, one for garden waste and a small waste food caddy. These are all collected on a weekly basis.

We also recycle glass, soft plastics and rigid plastics, but those last three we have to take them ourselves, to the local car park, a recreation ground , and the local tesco, all of which are in different directions! So it's quite a trek by the time we finish 😄

We have 3 wheelie bins, one for garden waste, one for general non recyclable waste and one for recycling which includes plastic, paper, cardboard, tin cans, aluminium foil and aerosols. We also have a box for glass and a caddy for food waste.

We are currently 3 bins - garden, household and recycling; one box for paper and one box for food.

They collect the food and throw it into your household bin; then they throw the paper and recycling in together. I'm all for recycling if the council actually bother at the other end.

And we have to pay for garden waste. And at the recycling centres/dumps.

I'd much prefer wheelie bins to the boxes I have now - I've got boxes for plastic/tins, boxes for paper, a box for glass, food caddy and green wheelie bin for garden waste and black for normal rubbish. My arms ache of dh isn't home to put the bins out - at least wheels are easy!

My elderly neighbour M is disabled, so her daughter asked the council if the bin collectors would fetch her bin down the drive and take it back once it was emptied, which they do.
The Friday of 'The Snow' was black bin day, (plastic/glass) and because of the weather our
bins were not emptied and we were told to leave them out and they would be emptied as soon as they could.
The week after was pink bin day ( household waste)
no adverse weather so the pink bins were emptied but not the poor forlorn black bins. EXCEPT for our neighbour M, the collectors emptied her pink AND her black bin in the same lorry! Makes a mockery of all the recycling we do doesn't it?

P.S. Fortunately, rest of our roads black bins were emptied the next day (good job really, as insurrection was beginning to simmer amongst the residents😆)

We have one, would love more as we have to lug boxes around

I have bins for food, paper& cardboard, glass, general and a jar for batteries in the kitchen and my kitchen is on the small side. I’ve seen drunken people put their bottles in the correct bin on a night out. You get used to it.

We currently have 5 wheelie bins
1 general waste
2 garden waste
1 cardboard
1 mega size for other recycling
(plus a home compost bin).
The cardboard and rec are collected 1 per month the general and gardening 2 per month.

My favourite though was in London with about 7 bags and boxes that were collected weekly but everything had to be separated.

Plus the pavements are so full of wheelie bins on bin days that walking in the road is the only option for pedestrians where I live.

Have decided not to log it as a complaint because the local council would issue parking fines for bins to generate revenue and then the rubbish would really hit the fan.

I would welcome that as our council has just moved to fortnightly collection

This sounds frequent to me, we’ve been on three weekly for a 6 months or so now!

It sounds worse than it is, even with nappies.

baffledcoconut · 27/03/2023 22:24

All you people just moving to two week collections! We’re allowed one wheelie bin that’s been halved in size and is collected fortnightly. Been that way for years. It’s a pain.

In our area we have:

Black bin - non recyclable
Brown bin - garden & food waste
Blue bin - paper, card, metal, plastic, glass

You can get an additional blue bin free (we have two) can pay for an additional brown bin (eg if you have a large garden) and can get an additional black bin if you have a large family/multiple kids in nappies/disabilities that produce extra waste

Four wheelie bins in the garden is more than enough though and they do get in the way!
