Do you keep snacks like chocolate, biscuits or crisps in? Is there anything you can't have in the house?

I love to have a variety of things in at all times, to go with a cup of tea. Today's choice was some chocolate-dipped marshmallows. We have a lot of different flavours of ice cream in the fridge because again I like the variety, I like being able to choose something different whenever I fancy rather than just having one thing. Never feel compelled to eat all of them in one go because they are there.

But I cannot do this with crisps! Crisps are the one thing where I can't leave them alone, so would eat far too many. I love crisps but cannot be trusted to buy them in bulk, they won't last. I buy a single serving packet of crisps if I really fancy them instead, even though it's more expensive to buy them like this.

If majorly stressed and losing my appetite, interestingly crisps are still one thing I can always eat without having to force it. When my mum was dying I ate a LOT of crisps and just went with it.

Do you have any snack that is so moreish and palatable you would keep wandering back for another helping, and so tend not to buy?

I love pickled onion walkers crisps. Can't get enough of them.

Chocolate doesn't last long. X

TheKeatingFive · 27/03/2023 08:44

I'm fine with most things, but those share bags of crisps are my downfall. I only buy crisps in single portion packs - the smaller the better.

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 27/03/2023 08:46

We don't buy chocolate/sweets as ds7 is diabetic, and I'm not at that stage where I can trust him not to help himself.

We have crisps though a mountain of crisps in a cupboard. 😂

I tried to keep snacks out of the house but I ended up walking to the corner shop to binge eat.

Also, life is miserable enough. So I always try and keep something we enjoy in the house.

We buy 1 x share bag crisps a week and share them on a Friday night. Same with a huge bag of buttons / Maltesers.

We always have biscuits and ice cream in the house.

I have a cupboard for crisps of all kinds for my grandchildren and bags of haribo's when they are on offer for them to route through.
However they are banned from touching my Walkers Square Crisps in Cheese & Onion flavour which once started is very hard to put down I just love them.

Open Pringles, it’s ok if the packet isn’t opened, but otherwise they call to me.

I don’t buy much snack food, as I’d rather the DC made themselves some toast or ate an apple. That way, they won’t bother if they’re just bored rather than actually hungry.

Xrays · 27/03/2023 08:52

Milkybar. The family sized bars are too big to eat in one go but too little to share so I have maybe 4 squares in a go and then I’m back to it again, and again, and again. Can’t leave it alone.

TheKeatingFive · 27/03/2023 08:56

Oh yeah Pringles. I never, ever buy Pringles.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 27/03/2023 09:06

Peanut butter.
Biscuits.
Chocolate.

Crikeyalmightey · 27/03/2023 09:06

If I kept those in the house, I would have to accept being 2 stone/sizes more. So a 12 versus a 16. Simple as that.
Also, am getting older, and notice any extra weight makes my joints ache. I'd rather feel well.

SallyWD · 27/03/2023 09:26

We always have a few biscuits, crisps etc in the house but not masses. I don't want to sound smug but I can enjoy a biscuit and not want more so for me it's not a problem to have these foods around.
My cheese consumption is alarming though!

mumonherphone · 27/03/2023 09:55

The only things I have in all the time are microwave popcorn bags, hot chocolate powder and non-chocolate biscuits (I would eat chocolate ones)

I have a six year old so I would feel mean if I didn't buy a packet of jammy dodgers for the week for him to eat after school and we have popcorn at weekends. So those things are mostly for him and then I allow myself hot chocolate.

Morningcoffeeview · 27/03/2023 09:56

Chocolate I just eat it and nice biscuits.

Ambertonix · 27/03/2023 10:18

Walkers salt and vinegar for me or sweet chilli sensations. Ive been known on many an occasion to chomp down a 6pack or 150g sharing bag to myself whilst on the sofa watching the soaps. It is such a disgusting habit but i cant help myself if they are there so i dont buy them now. It is the only way. Ive always been an all or nothing girl and at 50 im not holding my breath to change now!

Catspyjamas17 · 27/03/2023 10:23

Yes, we do have snacks in. I probably wouldn't bother if it was just me but DDs and DH insist on it.

My kryptonite though is cocktail sausages, sausage rolls and pork pies and we don't generally have those in the house.

Untrained · 27/03/2023 10:33

I cant have anything like cakes, biscuits, crisps, chocolate in the house. I have no self-control once its bought and paid for so I dont allow myself to buy it in the first place! If I ever do lapse and buy something of the type above I usually have an irresistible craving and its for eating right there and then and usually finished before I get home!

Yellowdaffodila · 27/03/2023 10:40

I do not understand this concept at all. In my home country we buy food for a week and have to make it last. If you eat it all in a day then surely you would then not have anything.
Why would you eat all at once?

Yellowdaffodila · 27/03/2023 10:43

I must add though I do not understand the snack thing. You eat your meal and then go about your activity or work. Why keep eating?

ArcticBells · 27/03/2023 11:16

I can't have peanut butter or jam as I'd eat an entire loaf of bread

Catspyjamas17 · 27/03/2023 12:19

Yellowdaffodila · 27/03/2023 10:43

Emotions. Boredom, stress, frustration, pleasure-seeking. Eating can be comforting, and something we find tasty can also be very pleasurable to eat. I feel a warm hug sensation when my stomach is full. Also many people have trouble telling when they are full due to a childhood of being told to finish your plate, regardless of appetite.

It's also quite easy to associate eating with certain activities. I used to stuff my face with snacks at university when writing essays as it appeared to help me concentrate, and I still sometimes do this when faced with something difficult at work. Often a cup of sweet tea takes the edge off though, and is less disasterous calorifically.

Obviously done to extremes it can be harmful, but I'd rather rely on a bag of crisps when not particularly hungry than smoking, taking harmful drugs, drinking excessive alcohol, or other coping mechanisms people rely on.

MatildaTheCat · 27/03/2023 12:22

Peanut butter.

tealandteal · 27/03/2023 12:24

I can keep most things in, chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets. Have a bit, save some for the weekend etc. Ice cream however I cannot leave. I just love it. I have an ice cream maker now so generally make it for when I want it.

Comefromaway · 27/03/2023 12:27

No there isn't. I tend not to remember to buy things like biscuits and crisps but dh buys them. I tend to have a fun size chocolate bar at work with my afternoon cuppa, then at home at weekends I have my mega expensive but gorgeous Fortnum and Mason pistachio & clotted creak biscuits. I try to make a tin last about 6 months due to the price.

YouveGotToGrooveIt · 27/03/2023 12:29

Fudge.

I am fine to leave most things but a box of fudge has a lifespan of about 5 hours, maximum.

OneTC · 27/03/2023 12:37

I don't dislike but am not particularly keen on most snack foods and prefer savoury things generally.

Maltesers though, I have never owned sufficient maltesers to find out if there's a maximum amount I can eat, more than once I've eaten 600g.
