We need some decent music around here.

I much prefer early to mid 80s stuff to the 90s indie/grunge dreck.

What do you think of Miley still being no.1?

It was a fuck you song that went viral on TikTok because of all the hidden messages in the lyrics and the video, of course it's still at No 1

I don't listen to chart music really, but FYI it's always been like this. I used to work with a lot of musicians and there's a kind of snobbery about 'commerical crap' that's in the charts. It never changes.

Imo we just get old and like old stuff because it bring back memories Wink

PlateBilledDuckyPerson · 26/03/2023 12:06

Ah, love a bit of Adam.

No idea who or what is in the current charts. Get your radio tuned to Absolute 80s - I'm listening to 'Drive' by The Cars as I type.

I admit I love commercial stuff I admit - basically if it's not Rihanna or Katy Perry I ain't got a Scooby! But I like certain eras more than others - love 70s and early 80s and the early 2010s - NDubz anyone? But hate mid 90s grunge and Britpop I mean the Blur/Oasis thing can get in the bin!

I'm sure it's generational, I was a 00s teen that loved all the rock, indie etc and we just don't seem to have that on the same scale any more. Seems to be fewer bands around, and not quite so in the mainstream where they do exist, that might just be my perception though.

Absolute Radio 00s is amazing Grin (and I remember my parents harping on about the 80s back then too, but I don't disagree, 80s music is a breed of it's own!)

See there's loads of stuff that when it first came out I hated. Oasis, Dido, Coldplay, Craig David... then the other day I randomly got Alexa to play songs from x year and I was like actually, this isn't so bad Grin

My music tastes range from 40s stuff to the Kinks to drum n bass so I don't really care. If I like it, I like it. What's number 1 or a hit seems to be determined more and more by TikTok. Watermelon Sugar was huge last year because of it, and Tones and I's Dance Monkey are just a couple off the top of my head. When you're exposed to tiny clips over and over and not the whole song you realise how catchy they are and why so many people end up streaming them pushing them up the charts.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 26/03/2023 12:27

I find stuff that I like from every era . I would say that 80s is the best! But probably very much influenced by the fact that this was the sound track to my teens/20s.

I also love stuff from the 70s, 90s, really old music from early 60s - and the more commercial recent stuff such as the Miley Cirus song mentioned.

There is a lot of modern stuff I hate though (I don't even know what the genre is called now) and I also don't like the majority of the heavy rock stuff my husband listens to.

I like late 00s - Saturdays/Calvin Harris 'Dance Wiv Me' / Dizzee Rascal, James Morrison 'Broken Strings' - Pink stuff from that time - basically from the middle of 2008 onwards so last 18 months of 00s

Adam is gorgeous and made some great tracks.

Did you know that Sid Vicious punched him while he was asleep in his sleeping bag?

There is still some decent music around.
Try Maverick Sabre for example

notacooldad · 26/03/2023 12:46

I love discovering new music and bands.
Spotify and soundcloud generate a weekly play list of new music which I love.
I love listening to Twitch and goping to small indy venues (while we still have them!) Sure, I like listening to stuff from the late 70s and early 80s , the era I was growing up in but I can't be doing with people haking on about the glory days of music as if that was the only time decent music existed. There's loads of fabulous stuff out there if you look.

TheClash2023 · 26/03/2023 12:56

You're absolutely right OP. Listening to Deutsche Girls right now.

DartholomewSpaceInvader · 26/03/2023 13:45

The problem I have with most current pop music that I hear is that, to me, a lot of it sounds the same. It's compressed as heck, it's not very dynamic (no key changes, hooks etc.) and it's very rare I hear a voice that has any qualities I can actually distinguish from any other voice (autotune possibly?) Bland. As soon as the song finishes I can't remember anything about it.

Fortunately for me there's about a 70 odd year back catalogue for me to listen to instead.

I really liked Sam Smith and Kim Petras 'Unholy'

I like Flowers by Miley - but it's not her best one. Midnight Sky, anyone?

Unholy was one of the few I've heard in recent times that was an exception to what I said, tbh.

Vicliz24 · 26/03/2023 13:52

I haven't known what's number one for years and yet i vividly remember thinking how could my parents not be interested. 60s-90s for me . When there were music tribes and so much variety.

Mysterian · 26/03/2023 14:02

I love new stuff. Some of what I listen to a lot is old but new to me (Mid 70s Lou Reed, MC5, "Junkshop Glam"), and some is new new.

New new like...

With a handful of exceptions, both my teen dc listen to the music I do, 80s/90s. Music is absolutely shit at the moment so who could blame them for going backwards.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 26/03/2023 14:08

Anyone find modern songwriting far too literal? It's stuff like "I pulled out my phone and called ya" or "He was wearing trainers and bought me a drink". I mean come on.

RichardHeed · 26/03/2023 14:11

You cannot seriously talk about decent music and then mention NDubz… fucking howling at like this. It’s not even music 😂😂😂 half the other shite you’ve listed too… oh man op. I needed a joke today.

I loved NDubz - you must've loke that excellent number 1 - number 1? Back in the spring of 2009 - Tinchh Stryder and NDubz - it was absolute class!! I loved the period mid 2008 to mid 2012 - life seemed exciting and fun - Party Rock Anthem, anyone?
