Struggling to be able to afford to eat as healthily

Is anyone else now?
Used to fairly easily be able to include lots of fruit and veg in our diets. I’m not finding that I’m just making sure that it’s enough for Dd, 4, fruit at least. For example if I buy apples, berries and kiwis one week, they’re generally all eaten by her 🙈which is great but I’m getting really conscious of the fact I don’t eat well anymore, the food shop is ideally like to do, full of seeds, fruit, veg etc just isn’t affordable anymore

This sounds great. Am I too late to plant canes for this year I wonder 🤔

Not too late to buy them but they may not fruit until next year depending on the variety. Honestly my raspberry canes were one of the best things I ever bought for the garden.

Just a warning about the raspberries to future growers. Contain them ir they will shoot out 2meters away randomly

If you have room get some redcurrants and blackcurrants too. Blueberries grow well in pots but you’ll need more than one bush for pollination. Mine haven’t been particularly successful tbh but we still get a small crop. We have cherry trees too but the wind or the birds usually claim those before we can.

Yes, such a relief to see I'm not the only one thinking the same.

My child loves his fish, vegetables and fruit.

I still buy my child those items and it costs me a fortune now.

For example, we used to have for example a fillet of salmon each together, rice and veg. I now go without and the two pieces I use for him to have two salmon dinners throughout the week.

As so much of my budget now goes on these items I eat poorly. I have the cheap pizzas, beans on toast or hot dogs - I know it’s terrible!

I go without lunch at work and it messes my metabolism I’m massive at the moment.

I do want to start a diet but the items will cost me so much. However, I guess I could do a soup diet like suggested on here.

Just a thought but could you do kedgeree with the salmon, it might make it go further? We loved it as kids with buttered toast.

I've read that you can ferment wild garlic the same way you make sauerkraut so I'm thinking of trying it when the wild garlic comes into flower and it is easier to forage the quantity required.

i get apple windfalls and puree and freeze them

Berries are very expensive per kilo, and a punnet goes nowhere in a short space of time when you have hungry mouths to feed.

When I was a kid (60's & 70's), strawberries, raspberries and the like were a seasonal treat and we might have them several times when they were in season. Grapes were what you bought for high days and holidays, and to give to someone in hospital. A lot of other things were seasonal too, like plums, cherries and peaches, and were reasonably priced in the summer months only. Pineapple and mandarin oranges came in tins. Satsumas, tangerines and clementines appeared at Christmas. Melons again were an occasional treat, and things like mangoes, blueberries and kiwi fruit were almost unheard of. If you saw a coconut - blimey!

What we did eat loads of were apples, pears, bananas and oranges. All of which are still by far the cheapest fruit. Stick with those and they are just as healthy as alll the more expensive stuff, which you can still have, just less often.

I still barely ever buy grapes. So expensive!

Also because I love them and will easily eat the lot in one sitting - which has bad side effects. 😳
