Start new job next week, large office, noticed at interview that everybody were VERY casually dressed , jeans etc , several men in baggy grey trackie bottoms. Official dress code has been sent to me and it says ‘ smart business casual , jeans and trainers are acceptable’
I don’t really do T-shirts jeans and trainers , more dresses tights and boots type outfits. Is this ok do you think? Will I look like a twat?!!!

Smart casual for us at work is trousers with trainers or casual day dresses with boots or dresses. Not really jeans but we're people facing. My husband is office based and it'sore jeans and t shirts but he wears casual ISH trousers and shirts as claims he can't get his Brain in work mode in jeans. He also wears boots instead of trainers. Totally fine.

My office is officially dress down now. I still wear the same shift dresses and flats that I’ve worn for years. It helps me get into work mode and where else would I wear my work dresses?

Grey tracksuit bottoms should be illegal everywhere apart from the sports field.

I would stick to the dress code - your dresses and boots should be fine.

Our office has dress down Friday, if you interviewed on a Friday, saw us all and then turned up in jeans on a Monday you would look out of place and feel uncomfortable all day I imagine.

Thank you all very much, I’m just going to stick with what I know then and try not to over think it. I’ve worn a uniform for many many years so this is new to me!

I don’t really do casual well, I feel awful in trainers unless I’m exercising, so I’m smart to the office. Sometimes others wear joggers etc that’s on them. I would stick with your plan

You can always dress smarter than the dress code! I work in a Tech company where everyone is in hoodies/jeans and trainers. I regularly wear suits and dresses because it's far more my style (I dress quite smartly just generally) and am in a management role so could have leadership/client meetings at any time. There's quite a few people who dress like me and no one cares. The idea behind smart casual is so people can wear more comfortable clothes if they prefer - if your idea of comfort is more formal, go for it.
