Not changed address on provisional

Got my provisional in 2014. Put my parents’ address as I was renting and expecting to move. I believe at the time you paid £20 to update address??

Lived abroad for 1.5 years from 2015 onwards, then returned to UK, lived at various rented addresses. Took no driving lessons during this time.

Until… at the end of last year in Nov I started taking lessons. Now I’m booking my test and have gone to website to update address on my provisional licence and they want to know where I’ve lived last three years. I kind of have two addresses - my own home of 6 years (where my bank and electoral vote is registered) and place I share with partner (on deeds but not mortgage) - moved here 2 years ago. I’m taking test near our shared home. My parents still live at same address.

Sooo… am I going to get fined for not updating my address? There doesn’t seem to be any guidance on how quickly you need to update them.

(Or if it matters that my provisional was not in use until Nov)

Once you've told them you've changed address then there's no longer an offence being committed and they don't tend to fine retrospectively so you should be ok.

Thanks! That’s good to know

Probably people who think you're unreasonable for saying you have two addresses.

The license should match your other government documentation and should also match the address where your car will be registered if you're planning to get one.

Thank you!

It only has to be an address at which you can be contacted. If your parents still live there you're grand.

Insurance obviously has to be registered to where the car is kept.

That's not true. You have to change the address on your driving licence if you're not living at the address it's registered to any longer.

GoodChat · 25/03/2023 20:01

Just to add, OP it's free to change your address. You only have to pay if you've lost your licence.

TinySaltLick · 25/03/2023 20:02

You are not going to get fined for that, I wouldn't worry a single jot

Thanks yeah I’m wondering if I imagined it or if they changed it at some point!

Had a simular issue. Driving instructor advised to get driving licence delivered to parents house then change address after

prawnring · 25/03/2023 21:16

It's still not true. Lots of press over recent years after the DVLA reminded people of their ability to fine you, but the requirement is to give them an address at which you can be contacted. If your parents still live there and can forward you any post (eg offences or expiration notices) then you're fine and there's no problem.
