Urgent telephone appointment after colonoscopy - AIBU to be scared?

I had a colonoscopy 5 weeks ago, all appeared normal but I had some biopsies taken. I contacted my GP surgery about my results and they said they would get my GP to look at them and call me back, but that if everything was normal I wouldn't get a call back. That was 2 weeks ago and I didn't hear back from my GP so I presumed all was normal.

Then today I've had a notification that I have an urgent telephone appointment with a hepatologist/gastroenterologist. Although the appointment is in 2 months.

I'm freaking out and the hospital and GP surgery is closed so I can't find out why I have the appointment.

Has anyone experienced similar?

No answer, sorry, just wanted to say that must be stressful.

What was the reason for the colonoscopy; were you having symptoms? Were they investigating for IBD such as Crohn's?

Were any polyps removed or just tissue samples for biopsy?

Try not to panic (easier said then done, I know).

Is it the urgent appointment that is in 2 months? If so it's probably just to get you off their records.

It was for suspected IBD after high calprotectin. No polyps were found or removed, and the biopsies were just random

My initial colonoscopy was an urgent referral and that took 2 months to come through so I think with current waiting times urgent appointments are taking a long time

Yeah. I had an automatic appointment come through after my colonoscopy which was just a telephone appointment with a nurse, and it's now been brought forward by a couple of weeks and is with the consultant that did my colonoscopy and it's written as 'Urgent telephone appointment'

If you were being investigated for IBD and tissue biopsies were taken then it's possible that (1) tissue may have shown changes indicative of Crohn's or (2) biopsies showed nothing in which case further investigation may be recommend to determine what caused the high calprotectin.

So either way a referral to a Gastro makes sense but shouldn't be viewed as anything scary or sinister.

I am not a doctor and you will naturally follow-up with your GP who can probably allay your fears, but I don't see any reason to panic based on what you've posted here. Best wishes and take care...

'urgent' in these circumstances is not Urgent. It means it can't wait 6 months or more. It's not urgent as in cancer, which falls under 2 weeks wait.

bookwormcrazy · 25/03/2023 18:37

If the appointment is in 2 months then it's nothing truly urgent.
Having been through something similar with my partner, he had an appointment booked in for 10 days with a consultant after a biopsy from a colonoscopy. As soon as they got the results it was moved earlier, even without the other scan they wanted. He did have cancer and it was bad news. There are strict turnaround times of 2 weeks when it's cancer. 2 months is not urgent in that respect. It still might be something that needs dealing with but extremely unlikely it's that.

ghgfdsdfgh · 26/03/2023 10:26

I don't think it's cancer as there were no polyps and all biopsies taken were random but I'm worried it's a form of IBD.

I'm just wondering what could show in a biopsy that wouldn't show during the endoscopy as everything looked normal.

So I phoned my GP for my biopsy results and everything was normal? I presume the appointment with the colonoscopy is to either discharge me or to decide next steps?

I've had blood in my stool so don't think that it's IBS?
