To ask can a stomach bug come and go in a child

Not really an AIBU more asking for advice here:
My little one was sick earlier this week. It was just one occasion and she was fine immediately after being sick.
Fast forward to this morning 3 days later she has been sick again but now seems fine. Husband was planning on doing work in his parents house today and bring her with him and is still planning on doing this.
Ive said she obviously has a bug so have said it's not fair she is brought out to infect others and secondly even though she's fine now doesn't mean she still isn't sick/contagious.
He thinks if she had a bug she'd be sick more frequently and lethargic and it's probably just something else .

Being sick once probably isn't a bug. It could be anything, has she eaten something new? Sometimes kids are just sick and to be honest, if she had a bug, you'd have all come down with it

DustyLee123 · 25/03/2023 07:58

If she isn’t unwell in any other way, temp/off her food etc, I wouldn’t assume she’s ill.

WimpoleHat · 25/03/2023 07:59

My DD is prone to being sick in a way that the rest of us aren’t. If she has a cold, for example, she’s usually sick (I reckon it’s the mucus). First sign of Covid was that she was sick for a couple of days (rest of us just had the more usual Covid symptoms). So, while it’s a sign that all is probably not 100% with your DD, I’d say it’s not necessarily the case that she has a stomach bug. Hope she’s soon better, whatever it is, though!

Agh thanks for the replies. She does have a runny nose and seems more bothered by that than anything else but she only had covid last week so the poor thing is getting a run if it.

My son was like this turns out it was diabetes type 1 but did have other symptoms.

It's not a sick bug if it's coming and going could be a food intolerance or something like that.

Yellowrosesmakemehappy · 25/03/2023 08:18

How old is she?

ObamaLlamas · 25/03/2023 08:19

It'll be because of covid. It takes a while to go, only having it a week ago is not long.

butfirstcoffee38 · 25/03/2023 08:22

@OneVeryTiredMam agh wow that's very scary, she didn't have anything new yesterday but I know intolerances can come as they get older.

@Yellowrosesmakemehappy she's 4

Yes.

Our whole family had a bug, one after another (so def not food poisoning). We were all ill for only about 12h. Throw up, not eat for a few hours, back to normal. Then DS (who was the first one to get it) got it the second time. All spread over about 2 weeks.

My.little girl is a finger suckered. She was sick all the time. Gp.put her on anti reflux medicine for 4 weeks to see if it was that. Turned out it was just the finger sucking, which has improved now she is 4 and she isn't sick anymore.

SeekChase · 25/03/2023 08:39

I would tell the gp and thry.may investigate GERD and might try the anti reflux med to rule it out, or diagnose it.

SeekChase · 25/03/2023 08:42

I was worried as my little girl was sick and missing preschool a lot due to their sickness policy. Never got to the bottom of it, but I believe it was the amount of finger sucking, which has reduced now she is 4 and now she hasn't been sick for weeks.

Really? Because a child that's just had covid has been sick twice in 1 week. No wonder real problems can't be seen by GPs.

Just trying to give some info. That's the point of these threads, a variety of experiences. I have experiences with a child being sick a lot. Didn't see the OP mention covid.

SeekChase · 25/03/2023 09:25

OP - I was just saying that if a child has stomach bug symptoms coming and going it could he something else. I didn't mean to make it sound like it needs investigating after only being sick after 1 week. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

PoseyFlump · 25/03/2023 09:32

It's worth keeping a food and symptom diary now in case you need it later for medical appointments. (Gives you more ammunition)

polkadotdinosaur · 25/03/2023 09:34

I second keeping a food diary. It could be an intolerance

Hearing she's had Covid, it's probably just the tail end of that.

AutisticLegoLover · 25/03/2023 09:58

Dd went 5 days between vomits with one bug once. Often 72 hours so way over the recommended 48 hours and back to school rule.
We also discovered she would vomit as a result of a high temperature with any other illness. Those tended to be the one offs.

SeekChase · 25/03/2023 10:06

I keep getting questioned about this comment. I apologise for my stupidity

Theunamedcat · 25/03/2023 10:09

It's probably a the snot making her sick tbh

FFS no wonder people can't get in to see their GP

SeekChase · 25/03/2023 10:31

My daughter was being sick 1 to 2 times per week for months and this had to be investigated. At least read the context of my comment. The title of the thread is "can a stomach bug come and go in child". I responded to this. It might not be a tummy bug. It could be something like GERD. if a child is being sick and has symptoms of tummy bug coming and going, it could be something else. So no need to be passive aggressive.

Jellybella · 25/03/2023 13:43

OP we are experiencing something similar with both of my DSs over the last week. Sick, diarrhoea and fever on and off. It's so weird one day fine then next day really ill again. Have been to doctor and ended up in A&E with one of them we got severely dehydrated and they confirmed it was a virus of some kind. It's a really weird one!
