WIBU to take DC1 out of school for a day?

DC1 is in y3. No school trips in Reception or Y1 because Covid. Not even the little walk to the supermarket. One trip in Y2. The Y3 trip was abandoned with no replacement as the aquarium isn't an aquarium any more. DC2 is in Y1. I've just signed a consent for his third (really cool) school trip, plus he got the supermarket visit.

DC1 is well behaved, excellent attendance - one day off all year due to weekend vomiting - exceeding expectations in all subjects, and (reasonably) pissed off about the unfairness. WIBU to pull a sickie and take them on an educational day out linked to their school topic? (Of course DC1 loves school and might actually refuse to pull a sickie, I offered it once before when a relative was making a brief visit from overseas and was turned down).

Oh also….talk to the school about the trips. It might trigger them to sort something for his year.

A yr 3 student is “pissed off about the unfairness”?
I would take them out but I’d REALLY reduce the agency you’re giving your DC1. If they learn now that pulling a sickie is ok and that they can justify it because of a perceived unfairness then you are setting yourself up for some royally entitled teenage behaviour.
but yes - I’d take them out! I’d spend a good while thinking of an excuse though - and I’d even be honest with the school (“I’m going to tell DC1 that I have applied for permission and that this is a one-off” etc etc).
A resounding “No” to the sickie, though. That way lies future indignant teenage contempt when you start saying, “No.”

How did this come back to life? DC refused to miss a day of school, so it was all academic anyway.

A yr 3 student is “pissed off about the unfairness”? Yes, and given that Y1 DC2 has been on three times as many trips, and every child I've ever known has been pretty quick to shout "THAT'S NOT FAIR", its hardly surprising :) don't worry, I am happy that I'm not raising a spoilt entitled brat. My children are more than used to being told No.

I would just take him out but just tell the truth, they can’t stop you doing it, it’s one day no big deal

Pull your kid out of school if you want but don't lie about it.

Or just go in the weekend and get someone to look after your other kid

Or just go with both kids. Rediculous that you say "but then dc1 would take over". Do you never take both kids anywhere then ?!..

I have a y3 child too so I see what you mean but the fun of the trips for my child is the experience of going from school and with their friends. It wouldn’t be the same if I took them whether their sibling came or didn’t.

In your shoes, I would do day trips in the holidays that were more focused towards the topics the older child has learnt to try compensate but I wouldn’t take them out of school for it.

Did your school not run normal trips last year when they were in Y2? We had a very normal spring and summer term last year running same trips as they used to pre-covid

Did you speak to the school about it? It does seem unfair to cancel all trips for a year group without reinstating alternatives when it becomes possible.

My dc's school had trips (residential and/or abroad) cancelled during 2020 and 2021, but they resumed last year. It seems strange that they haven't engineered any for this year either, considering things are back to normal?

I don't think you'd be wrong to question this. There's no reason why Y3 can't go on trips to museums or whatever now, is there?

I don't blame your dc for being hacked off, anyone would be!
