Quick way to get photo ID before Monday?

susiesuelou · 23/03/2023 19:34

Sorry posting for traffic!

My brother has a job interview on Monday (actually part 3 of a 3 stage interview process), and he's been asked to bring photo ID to the interview but he doesn't have any - he doesn't drive or have a passport. He's only his early 20s, he has autism and he struggles quite a lot with things, so getting this job would really mean the world to him.

How can I help him? Is there a way for him to get a form of photo ID before Monday? 🤞🏻

Thank you!

Not photo ID but could he take his birth certificate? Then discuss with them what he can provide at a later stage?

crumpet · 23/03/2023 19:37

Has he had a job before? P45 or similar he can take also?

chocolateisavegetable · 23/03/2023 19:38

Normally there’s a way of getting around photo ID - from memory a birth certificate and 2 other documents like bank statement and letter from HMRC.

No he hasn't been employed before, so no P45 or anything. But yes I could suggest his birth certificate and then provide photo ID at later point, thank you 😊

There are other ways to get photo ID but not before Monday.
His best bet would be to email / call explaining he doesn't have a passport or driving license and ask what would be an acceptable alternative.

Off subject but is your brother aware you now need photo ID to vote, he can apply for a free ID card for this through the gov.uk website

susiesuelou · 23/03/2023 19:42

Ah this is great, thank you!

Could be apply for Eg a young persons railcard online? I think they come back fairly quickly although they are by no means very 'official'.

As regards the voter ID scheme, people can also use a card with the official PASS mark on it to vote in the local elex. There are quite a lot of things, including the citizen card. Worth having a look as you can use it for other stuff as well (disclaimer - am not advocating ID cards by the back door!).

I've done it this way before. Something with your address/bank and a birth certificate. Hope you manage to get something sorted x

Sorry that wasn't very clear. I meant that if you apply for a digital Railcard, you can hold it on your phone and show it as a form of photo ID. They send it back to you as an attachment.

My eldest was offered a job before he got his photo id through, he went to the interview and explained he was still waiting for his provisional licence and they were fine, it came through 2 wees after we applied, about a week after an interview. They may well be ok if you explain the situation.

Chersfrozenface · 23/03/2023 19:55

Just a warning that to get a railcard online you need a passport or driving licence.

To get one with your birth certificate you have to go to a staffed station ticket office or National Rail ticket agent with the certificate and a passport style photo and a form printed out and filled, or they might have forms to fill in at the office.

Assuming the ID is for a right to work check, this page tells you what alternative documents they should accept: www.gov.uk/legal-right-work-uk

Augend23 · 23/03/2023 20:08

I don't think a citizen card will be what he needs as the ID is likely for a right to work check.

But he can then use his birth certificate and ni number...

LIZS · 23/03/2023 22:23

Some bus passes may be valid for id.

Addymontgomeryfan · 23/03/2023 22:25

I had a similar issue when my license was at the DVLA and I had lost my passport. They accepted my birth certificate, a bank statement and a letter with my national insurance number on it dated within the last 3 months.

Except he can do that without a citizen card too? See below - birth certificate and document from HMRC showing NI number.

This is completely inaccurate.
You can apply for it online, pay the £30 or whatever it is and if you've chosen a digital card it's available near instantly or a few days if you want a physical copy.
I've also bought them in the train station before and no ID needed

"Online
The quickest and easiest way to buy is right here online. All you need is:

A valid passport, UK driving licence or EEA national identity card to verify your identity
A digital passport-style photo saved to your computer, tablet or mobile phone
A debit or credit card"

"At a Staffed Station Ticket Office
You can buy a 16-25 Railcard at any staffed station ticket office or National Rail-licensed Travel Agent. You can do it on the day you are travelling, just ensure the ticket office is open.

If you're applying at a station for the first time you'll need to complete an application form. There are usually application forms available at stations, but in order to save time it’s a good idea to fill in the form before you get there. You can print and fill in the application form which is available to download here and bring the form alongside either of the following:

Your birth certificate
Passport (all nationalities accepted)
UK driving licence
EEA national identity card

You'll also need:

A passport-size photo"

Where to buy - 16-25 Railcard

You may have been buying a different type of railcard like the Two Together one which isn't restricted by age.

The 16-25 railcard requires you to prove your age, so yes you do need to prove it using a passport or driving licence when buying online.
