to be concerned about how many painkillers DH takes

DH is a good dependable man & loving husband and father with a busy full time job. No money worries, no concerning behaviours and we can talk about anything. (Usually!)

My worry is that he takes painkillers at least daily. I know for sure he takes two when he wakes in the night as I hear the plastic wrapping being broken.

If I ask he just laughs and mocks the notion of 'being addicted' suggesting I'm over reacting.

And maybe I am? It's just over the counter stuff, not causing financial or health issues so does it even matter?

Today I needed painkillers and knew I had bought some but there were none in the medical box. I eventually found a whole stash by his side of the bed. About 12 packets in various states of use.

I'm not worried that he's stock piling. It's more like a habit he has of grabbing some on way to bed and adding them to his little pile!

Is this just a little security blanket thing or do I need to be worried? Does anyone have experience of this?

Yes but whether it is harmful or not doesn't matter. PP doesn't 'need' to take codeine every night for 25 years. They just do it to sleep better. That's what's stupid, why do it even if the risk is minimal?

@Starlightisenthralling don't listen to the people sending you down to the nearest drug rehab for your 8mg in 24 hours 'habit'.
You've taken the same dose for 25 years and are fine. It's when it leads to people increasing the dose to dangerous levels it's a problem.
(Just for clarity im an HCP, I take 8 x 30/500 cocodamol every day, I have for 15 years) my dr is aware and my rheumatologist.

The opS husband is hiding his otc drugs which makes me think there's a problem.
I hope they get sorted

Thank you for this, my thoughts exactly x

Sorry but you're being daft. It helps me sleep, that's actually fundamentally very important no? It does me no harm, you say it doesn't matter, then why does it matter IF I take it but I get to have a decent night's sleep?

Scalottia · 24/03/2023 11:56

I'm being daft? I'm not the one who is depending on codeine to help me sleep.

I don't think there are any risks form taking one codiene before bed.

You can't seem to explain why it's daft though despite health professionals on here saying it's ok. Not desirable but not harmful either. Anyway, I'm not going to bother with this any more as derailing from the real serious issue that the OP posted about.

Just plain paracetamol and ibuprofen shouldn't be too much of an issue. Just be aware though, my ex started codeine. Over our 10 year relationship it worsened until we split as his habit was crazy. Since we split, he is now a heavy drug user and has been in prison. It can creep up very very slowly but eventually ruins peoples lives.

My husband is 80 and has a chronic back issue, partly caused by a couple of accidents over the years. He was taking ibuprofen - not every day but several times a week. He now has stage 3 kidney disease in consequence and has been advised by his doctor to stop taking them, so he now puts up with the pain as paracetamol doesn't seem to do anything to relieve it.

8/500 is hardly a strong dose of cocodamol. You are hardly an addict don't worry 😂

Thank you, I was beginning to wonder! 🤣

My friend constantly took ibuprofen. She had back issues a took them preemptively. She then developed a serious stomach disorder. After a year of agony and many tests it was discovered that she had an ulcer and kidney damage from the ibuprofen
