Job application- no acknowledgement

AIBU to think they're not interested?

I applied on 1st March, applications close at the end of the month.

If they really liked me they'd have been in touch?

I know my application was received and read.

They won't be in touch until after they have received all the applications. You might be just what they want, but someone could apply on the last day who is more suited. Just sit and wait it out.

Aprilx · 23/03/2023 08:23

Who knows, possibly they are waiting until the closing date before they contact any candidates.

Untitledsquatboulder · 23/03/2023 08:24

They won't be in touch til after the closing date. Any half way professional firm will set up a shortlisting day and sift, read and score all applications then.

Mindymomo · 23/03/2023 08:26

When my DS left university he must have applied for over 50 jobs, hardly any acknowledgment for any of them. Recruitment company ones were a bit better.

Wanttobeyou · 23/03/2023 08:27

Do you think so? Even with applications not closing I'd have thought they would have invited for interview if interested.

I meet all of the criteria in spades, I was so excited about it! I spent hours on the application.

I've been offered another job and they need to know if I accept; I'd rather do this other one so I feel a bit unsure with what to do.

So applications haven’t even closed yet? You need to chill out, as hard as that is when you want a job. The fact they’ve opened your email does not mean your application has been scored. They’ll probably do them all together after it closes.

How do you know your application was received and read?

Why would they be reading and scoring it if the vacancy hasn’t even closed yet?

You can’t know who you want to interview if you haven’t even got your full candidate pool.

Thing is, it's a very small, family owned independent company, rather than a bigger firm as such; I'd really hoped for some contact by now.

There is more than one way to run a recruitment process. For example I have seen job advertisements with a closing date that state they may fill the position before the closing date. But another company might decide to wait until all the applications are in and then pick out their top ones for interview.

titchy · 23/03/2023 08:31

Sounds like they're doing things properly, which they should. That's a good sign. You shouldn't want to work for an employer who doesn't bother to have processes which are fair and transparent.

CountZacular · 23/03/2023 08:31

It doesn’t matter the size of the firm. They have provided a closing date. They will be waiting for all applications that come in by that date. Recruitment isn’t a first come, first serve(offer) approach.

You’ll hear (or not) after the closing date. Stop worrying about it at the moment.

They won't interview until after the closing date, if they did, chances are, they could miss a candidate thats head and shoulders above the rest.

Is this your first job? because recruitment doesn't work in the way you think it does. If they include a closing date, they cannot interview before that date as it is not then a fair process. They have to give everyone an equal chance of being short-listed and invited for interview.
Some employers won't change interview days on the basis that if you are not available - tough (particularly if they have stated the closing date and interview date in the job ad)
You may not even have your application acknowledged, and you may not be informed that you have not been shortlisted (if that is the case) depending on the size of the employer and the number of applications
You may think you are perfect for the job, but then again, so do the other candidates. And your application may have been given a once-over already 9which is not good prective by the way), but it still has to be compared against all the other applications, even if that means waiting until midnight on the closing day

follyfoot37 · 23/03/2023 09:08

*Should say (which is not good practice)!

Obbydoo · 23/03/2023 09:10

I wouldn't even open the applications until after the closing date, it would be pointless to do so as you can't benchmark the response until you have all of the applications in front of you. I would expect feedback around 1 to 2 weeks after the closing date.

Hi OP - I recently applied for a job in which I met all the criteria in spades and what's more was local (5 minutes away) so no issues with commuting. I didn't even get an interview.

You've got one definite job offer against one where you might not even get a response, let alone an interview or an offer.

Oceanrudeness · 23/03/2023 09:39

I'm currently looking for a new job. I applied for one on the 13/2, job listing closed on the 22/2, invited to interview on the 7/3 and the interview is tomorrow. So has taken almost 6 weeks. So hold out hope! I tried to just put it out of my mind until I heard anything. You don't know what's going on at the workplace at all, just think - may be a really busy time for them, or even the person doing the recruiting is on AL or off sick. Anyway, good luck!

Best of luck for your interview tomorrow 😀

But it’s not the closing date. It wouldn’t be ethical to offer someone an interview when not all applications are in. They wouldn’t be able to grade the applications and offer an interview to the top five or whatever.
