throwing away out of date frozen food?

Crumpetdisappointment · 23/03/2023 05:54

i threw away a load of frozen food, best before or use by, i cant remember, 2022
i have been persuaded here to use out of date tinned food but what about frozen food,
frozen fruit,
frozen quorn,
frozen vegetarian sausage rolls?
all at least 6 months out of date

All fine. Nothing wrong with it.

In theory there may have been quality issues with some items- the precooked pastry sausage rolls might be a bit flakier than us ideal, for example.

There won't be safety issues.

Honestly that's an awful waste. Food stays good for as long as it's frozen.

Maraudingmarauders · 23/03/2023 06:02

I'd eat it and not throw it away. I only really throw frozen food out if it has significant freezer burn.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 23/03/2023 06:04

Yes it was fine, freezing food stops it from going bad. A best before date can be ignored. Its best before that date, but also OK after

PoseyFlump · 23/03/2023 06:04

Definitely this. But I have to be sneaky because my DP is religious about dates whereas I'll eat anything! I've never had a dodgy tum yet. (We don't eat meat)

OtterlyMad · 23/03/2023 06:05

I’ve never even thought to check dates on frozen food if I’m honest! I hate food waste so it wouldn’t deter me even if it was out of date.

AnnoyedFromSlough · 23/03/2023 06:05

I wouldn't even think to check dates on frozen food. It would all have been fine. Shame you didn't think to ask before binning it.

Crumpetdisappointment · 23/03/2023 06:05

i know @AnnoyedFromSlough

OP posts:
Crumpetdisappointment · 23/03/2023 06:05

so how old is too old?

OP posts:
PoseyFlump · 23/03/2023 06:06

It's as long as a piece of string.

Crumpetdisappointment · 23/03/2023 06:05

so how old is too old?

According to a food safety website

'The guidelines for freezer storage are for quality only—frozen foods stored continuously at 0 °F or below can be kept indefinitely'

Changingplace · 23/03/2023 06:10

I’ve never checked dates on anything frozen in my life, it’d be absolutely fine.

user18 · 23/03/2023 06:13

I have stuff in my freezer that’s five years old and it still gets used. It’s completely fine. Only freezer burn stuff gets thrown away.

PsychoHotSauce · 23/03/2023 06:28

Why ask after you've done it? You've wasted a load of food and now have gone to the effort of making a thread? Confused

Crumpetdisappointment · 23/03/2023 06:32

and thanks for your effort @PsychoHotSauce

OP posts:
tiredhadenough · 23/03/2023 06:32

Is it fresh food you froze or frozen food already?
If a BB date is 03/22 and it's fresh when you freeze it the date means nothing surely as that's why you have frozen it 🤔

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 23/03/2023 06:34

I never ever check the dates on frozen food. I freeze stuff so I don’t have to chuck it away. If it’s in the freezer then it’s fine!

Crumpetdisappointment · 23/03/2023 06:36

no its stuff i bought in the freezer department of the shop, which is why it has the date on
i have no idea about stuff i freeze myself, mainly blackberries

Agree with previous posters. All ok unless there is freezer burn. I have cooked a few frozen vegetables which looked a bit gnarled, but they plumped up when steamed. Occasionally I throw something away when I realise it is NEVER getting used!

Hmmm... Maybe for next time? Do you always think in such a short term way?

Surely the short term thinking lies with the OP - impulsively throwing away food and only questioning it when it's too late to do anything about it Confused

bellac11 · 23/03/2023 07:36

Terrible waste. Dont quite understand why people do this but my OH is the same, he has a problem quite honestly

BertieBotts · 23/03/2023 07:45

I have this argument with DH all the time! Frozen food lasts forever. You can completely ignore those dates.

Crumpetdisappointment · 23/03/2023 07:48

it is food for dd not for myself, and that swung it for me, i would hate to send her back to university with an upset tummy after eating the out of date vegetarian sausage rolls!
and i didnt particularly like that frozen fruit anyway Grin
but for next time, i will do better research

I read a brilliant article recently about some archaeologists/paleontogists who cooked and ate a few slices of a Siberian frozen mammoth carcass to see what it was like. Horrible freezer burn, apparently!

Your food was perfectly good, op.
