If you have ADHD and work, what job do you do?

I'm really low and struggling. I have a physical disability and diagnosed ADHD and sometimes it all feels too much. Sometimes though I don't believe it's ADHD just me being too stupid and lazy and crazy.

But on the off chance it is actual ADHD with me, and because I know there are tonnes of women with ADHD who do have great careers -

What job do you do if you also have it?

What do you think is key to your success in the workplace?

Has anyone had any sort of ADHD coaching or mentoring or anything extra outside of work that helps?

Has anyone broken out of a toxic rut of feeling utterly convinced you are stupid and genuinely changed their self esteem and now feel like a normal ok person?

Interesting about writing things down to fix them in my brain. It works for me because then I can forget. Too many things to do in my brain is like being bugged by a mosquito 🦟. I know there's something there but what.

A phone calendar is also a god send but enter it straight away or it becomes another pesky insect buzzing around

Police officer
I can’t deal with admin or computers but I’m good at talking😂. We deal with a lot of mental health, in fact that more so than actual crime. Many times I have had to talk utter shite to someone for hours whilst we have waited for them to be admitted. Sometimes the person has found talking to me more productive than talking to the psych.

Damn, this is giving me "In another life..." feelings. Advertising was what I applied to study at uni but my ADHD didn't let me get there.

Just throwing it out there for anyone on the thread - there are short advertising courses you can do to meet a partner and put a portfolio together. You don't need to study it at uni. You don't need to have been to uni at all.

I work in Civil Service. Lots of meetings, filing, thinking.

I really struggle if I'm honest.
I used to be so good at my job until I developed epilepsy and out of nowhere developed ADHD.

Some days, I am absolutely great and can concentrate and I'm really on the ball and other days I can barely complete any work. It can take me hours (I wish I was joking), to put a long, coherent email together. I struggle to put words in the right order or get it to make sense. I can't concentrate in meetings, my note taking has gone terrible.

Just realised that wasn't a particularly positive story!! I'm here to read other people's experiences and tips though!!

@washingmachineheart what does your role involve ? I’m in marketing and would love a wfh role that doesn’t involve events!!

Just to suggest you should get reassessed… you can’t develop ADHD as an adult in the way you describe ‘our if nowhere’. It’s a neurodevelopmental disorder. Obviously plenty of people are diagnosed in adulthood, but what you describe is different to someone who is only picked up with ADHD as an adult. The key difference is that these features are new for you. It is much more likely to be related to your epilepsy or its treatment. You should discuss with your neurologist.

sorry but hope that’s helpful

@C1239 it's mostly content (so copywriting blog posts, scripts for video, ad copy, email, case studies etc.) and campaign strategy and reporting.

I made the conscious choice to move into a specialism after a few generalist roles that involved anything and everything. I'm happy to promote the events, but I don't want to head them up! Equally, I'm not a graphic designer just because I've used Adobe.

If you're happy in marketing I'd definitely recommend content/copy/ads/campaign strategy for a wfh role. I think this has been muddied somewhat by social "content creation" recently, because there's a lot more variation out there, particularly if you look to B2B and niche industries that need a lot of collateral.

C1239 · 25/03/2023 14:23

@washingmachineheart thats completely the sort of role I would love! After doing a few marketing roles now those are the areas I’ve decided I’d like to focus on really

Emergency surgeon. I’m really good in a crisis and thrive under pressure. I struggle with academic tasks with procrastination .

I am not a completer finisher . I am struggled with postnatal and perimenopause brain fog as it makes me thinking far more chaotic. I’m normally hyper focused when operating. Currently struggling with noise in the room.

I'm officially undiagnosed yet feel strongly I have ADHD.
I chose to be a chef for over 35 years so far.
Long days fast paced with lots of challenges and adrenaline. I cut my hours recently and have been referred to as stupid by my new colleagues. In reality I do things differently but get results.i don't like the routine as much as they do so may go back to a fast paced varied place.
