Hotel has told us there will be no power from 11am-5am

OH and I have booked a night away at a 5 star spa hotel in a few days' time (£400 for bed and breakfast including spa access).

The hotel have emailed to say due to an emergency they need to re-boot their power systems so there will be no power throughout the hotel from 11pm to 5am. They say they have selected this time in the hope guests will be asleep.

They are being very casual about it but IMO we are paying a lot of money and I don't expect there to be a 6 hour power cut ! We are rarely asleep before midnight, will be wanting to charge our phones overnight, and I don't expect to be stumbling around in the dark if I wake up in the middle of the night needing the toilet.

According to the T&Cs it's too late to cancel but I think we should have the choice to given the circumstances? I'm thinking as a minimum we should be offered some form of compensation on point of principle? Or even being able to reschedule to the following evening (which might work ok for us) at the same cost?

How much power are people using between 11pm - 5am?

I don't get it.

How is that relevant? The room is £400. They should be able to use electricity however they want. I’m usually awake between those hours.

It doesn't matter - electricity is a basic amenity at any hotel, surely?

I’m shocked at the number of people who think this is OK. Electricity is a basic, at any time of day or night, in an expensive hotel. I’m glad you swapped your reservation.

It's bonkers isn't it?!

Electricity, hot running water and heating are just basics when you're staying in a hotel, surely?!

Cocobutt · 20/03/2023 18:16

I’m glad it’s been sorted but YABU to leave your phone charging overnight 😮😮

Harriyet · 20/03/2023 18:16

If it needs doing they have to pick a night and a time somewhere. Will it really impact you? Plug your phones in they will start charging when the power kicks in. I personally couldn't give a toss about having no electricity for a time when I'm asleep. Even if I was still awake for an hour with no electricity, it's no big deal to me. But each to their own.

Ohhlavache · 20/03/2023 18:17

I frequently stay at a lovely hotel in Newquay and wouldn't go up to my room until at least midnight. Drinks, snacks, music, nice lighting and sea.

This would piss me off!

You're missing the point.

She's paying £400 a night. If she wants to have a cuppa at 1am or watch TV until 6am, she should be able to.

If the hotel can't offer the basics then they need to compensate people accordingly.

Ohhlavache · 20/03/2023 18:19

Oh glad it's been sorted 😊 I also love a midnight swim in the indoor pool. Beautiful x

TheYearOfSmallThings · 20/03/2023 18:20

I would absolutely cancel and rebook, and any good hotel should have offered and anticipated that many guests will do so.

Lots of people will be up after 11pm - I always am. Having no light etc at that time is an absolute deal-breaker. Also everything will start beeping and chirping and flashing at 5am when they transfer the smoke and security systems back to mains.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 20/03/2023 18:21

Oh I see you changed the date - very wise.

FlyingCherries · 20/03/2023 18:23

Precisely zero of the people telling you you’re being unreasonable would be happy to pay £400 for a night with no electricity from 11pm. That 27% is a very close approximation to the percentage of users who are only here to enjoy being arsey.

Rafting2022 · 20/03/2023 18:25

I know this isn’t the point of the thread but what are all these phones that need hours to re-charge overnight? They need an hour or two max!

Cocobutt · 20/03/2023 18:29

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/03/2023 18:19

Why?

Because they can start a fire.

No phone needs to be charged overnight.

Most take an hour max to charge and so you can charge it before you go to sleep.

Rosula · 20/03/2023 18:31

Kpo58 · 20/03/2023 16:35

You could put your phones on to charge earlier in the day, such as when you are eating dinner. Unless you have medication that needs to be refrigerated, then you are being pretty unreasonable.

Nonsense. For a 5 star hotel, guests shouldn't have to be scrambling around making accommodations like this. They may want their phones with them at dinner time, and it's perfectly reasonable to want power after 11 pm - I would normally expect, at the very least, to be able to read in bed after that time, and possibly to watch TV or do stuff online.

PuttingOnTheKitsch · 20/03/2023 18:32

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/03/2023 18:12

£400 a night to watch a film on your phone?! Do you really think that's acceptable?

By torchlight too! This place is insane sometimes!

Ohhlavache · 20/03/2023 18:33

My phone takes many hours to charge fully.

But I don't charge it overnight. I charge it at work and use their tiny tiny amount of power of my own 😂

Richhandcream · 20/03/2023 18:33

I love it when people can't be bothered to read Op's updates.

No I'm definitely not missing the point. As I said, for me this would not be an issue at all. I'd be asleep by midnight anyway, I wouldn't let an hour of no electricity ruin my stay. But as I also said, each to their own. Some people might want a cup of tea at 1am, those people it would be an issue. I cant stand hot drinks at 1am, why would I care that there was no electricity while I was asleep?

TheAudie · 20/03/2023 18:34

That’s ridiculous: they should move you to another night if that’s what you want. Especially at that price

Even if it were 40 quid they should still be able to turn on the light to go to the loo!

pettysquabbles · 20/03/2023 18:36

I'm sure I read this exact post a few weeks ago.

Rosula · 20/03/2023 18:36

Schmutter · 20/03/2023 18:09

Take a power bank to charge your phones.

it’s really a non-issue imo.

And how would OP deal with, say, a reasonable wish to read after 11 pm? Or needing to get to the loo in a strange room in the dark? Is it really unreasonable to want those things dealt with when you're paying £400K?

Rosula · 20/03/2023 18:37

Sorry, not 400K! £400 is bad enough.

How could you guarantee you won't wake up in the night and needs some light, whether because you need the loo or are ill or whatever?
