Should cleaning up be part of Mothers Day?

I’ve had a lovely Mother’s Day today and have no complaints generally. Save for one little one. Whenever it’s Mother’s Day or my birthday my partner will shoo me out of the kitchen. If I try to clean up breakfast or dinner he’ll tell me not to, because it’s my special day.

Which is fine, except he then doesn’t clear up either, which means it’s just left until tomorrow, when I get home work earlier than him, so it will fall to me to clean it all up! It feels churlish to call him out on it when he’s got the kids cards and presents for me, made me breakfast in bed, made dinner etc but it’s mildly irritating to know that in terms of clearing up, it’s just all been left for me to deal with tomorrow.

AIBU to think that cleaning up should be done by the non-special parent on the day of the special occasion?!

Well you won't thank me for this but its really not a special day, its just a day and washing a few pots won't ruin it.
BUT it is a bit crap that he insists you shouldn't do it yet just leaves it for you to do tomorrow.
If you know he would leave it you should have said OK thanks I assume you are doing the pots tonight then

Tell him. “You cooking is no treat if I’m left cleaning the kitchen afterwards”. No point seething, be honest about how shit and annoying it is.

For us Birthdays/Mothers &Fathers day are a very big deal.

Doesn't have to cost a lot but it's all about making that person feel absolutely on top of the world. They are pampered and not a finger is lifted. The kids are massively into it and as they get older I really hope that one day they treat their loved ones the same.

With the life our generations are living there's not many opportunities to really put your feet up and just be loved on. So for me absolutely dishes should not happen.

domesticgodmess · 19/03/2023 22:38

Just realised DH does this fairly frequently, I'm not falling for it again.
He says go on up to bed, but then doesn't actually do the dishes. I'm not a tidy person by nature but make a big effort for him, yet now I feel I'm being swizzed.

Don't do them tomorrow

Bowsersfightnight · 19/03/2023 22:40

@JackGrealishsCalves Just because it’s not special to you doesn’t mean it isn’t to OP.

Does he never clean up? That’s a bit of a bigger issue than one day, Jesus Christ!

ItsSuchACryingShame · 19/03/2023 22:42

I’ve washed several things unloaded and reloaded the dishwasher, done laundry, sorted the recycling, emptied the kitchen bin etc.

Stuff needs doing so whoever’s in the mood to do it, does it in our house.

Xmasbaby11 · 19/03/2023 22:49

I think overall if you’re happy, this isn’t an issue on Mother’s Day. It’s been a lovely day but I’ve done the odd chore - it’d be the same on Father’s Day.

neither of us would leave a load of dishes til the next day though, so I wouldn’t like that. I’d probably say something.

snitzelvoncrumb · 19/03/2023 22:58

Sometimes you just have to think differently. Come home late. Something has come up and you are running late. DH might not clean it up, but he will be left trying to cook in a messy kitchen.
