AIBU?

To think that people don't give a shit about their neighbours any more

Beautiful sunny Sunday here which is being ruined by neighbor's very loud building work which has been going on all weekend. Some kind of noisy fucking grinder thing coupled with music blasting out from a radio. Am so irritated. Aren't there rules around this kind of stuff on a weekend?

Of course the neighbor having the work done has fucked off out so that they don't have to listen to it.

You are cross that someone is making improvements to their home? If they are out, they likely don't know the builder is blasting music. As the builder to turn it down.

I am cross that someone is making lots of noise on a weekend when I don't believe it's allowed. I've had building work done myself, but would never allow the builders to work outside of the permitted hours.

Building noise is irritating whenever it's done and it's always going to distrub someone. WFH-ers, nightshift workers, parents of babies and small children, people with nervous dogs...

Would you rather they really went for it and got it finished as quickly as possible, or let it drag on for ages, doing a couple of hours here and there?

I’d prefer a weekend than the drilling that keeps disturbing me WFH

Let me guess, you have had the same work done but years ago/maybe previous owners did it so therefore it doesn't count. Rules never apply to the OP of these threads.

I'd agree, you don't seem to care at all for your neighbours!

You posted at 11:52. Hardly unsociable hours!

I feel like lots of people are missing the point. It's Sunday.

Yes I had building work done around 5 years ago but it was always done within the permitted hours. My issue is that they don't seem to give a shit that what they're doing is not permitted. But whatever. I'm unreasonable.

People will try & get away with it until someone complains. So go round & tell them, then speak to your neighbour when you see them.

If you think they're flaunting the rules then you have two options:

  1. Ask them to stop and point out to them face-to-face that they're breaching the rules.
  2. Ring environmental health on grounds of a noise complaint and see how far that gets. They may shut them down or they may just laugh and mark you down as a vexatious caller, depending on what area you live in.

I think people in general don't really care or consider others.

I make a point of caring and going out of my way for my own neighbours and it is reciprocated. Having neighbours issues is a nightmare in my mind.

Yup. My neighbours couldn't close a door without slamming it if their lives depended on it.

Doesn't seem to have occurred to them that in a row of properties the noise might travel.

We work long hours which means anything like that has to be done on the weekend. There will always be someone who complains about the noise no matter what day it is.

For goodness sake you need to Google your local council's rules, not some random site.

I'm with you OP.

The nicer neighbours would speak to you in advance and keep you forewarned so that you can be prepared for disruption.

No excuse for music that impacts on other people.

Our ndn has gone out and left 2 fucking barking ddogs outside....
Meanwhile our responsibly owned ddogs are snoozing peacefully...
Other side ndn says he forgets we have 4....

@MrsDoylesDoily the rules are pretty much the same all over the country and how do you know I don't live in Herts?

Building noise is not permitted where I am on Saturday afternoons or all day Sundays. Our Council have someone round if you phone them and if they have repeat complaints they threaten a fine.
The times for permitted building work are on the website.

People still have weekends at home to relax and if you can't hear yourself think then it contravenes regulations.

It also helps if you record the noise and post it on FixMyStreet.

A one-off was acceptable but when you live in an area that is like a building site every year when the weather permits, it's not on.

Nobody wants to get the authorities involved because then you need to disclose it when selling the house and everyone's scared it will tank the house value. So everyone just tries to quietly sell and move away and the shithead neighbours are allowed to keep on being shitheads.

(Over-generalising. Of course some people do complain. But I think this is a big factor.)

It’s fairly obvious you tried to find something which said it should be avoided 😂
