How would you cope in a world where society has crumbled or is very flimsy?

To a greater or lesser degree?

Irrespective of the reason why (war or zombies or plague or whatever) if there was only a very brittle skeleton of society and the safety nets left, how would you do?

As a person dependent on medication for survival I'd be fooked pretty fast. What I find interesting is, maybe if I was a different type of person I might be ok despite needing medication - but my personality just isn't wired for that sort of situation. Introverted, would be completely drained living in a group, just would want to run away from any sort of 'leader' type.

Whereas some people would probably thrive in a group dynamic, being constantly around people all the time, earnestly bossing folk around who they didn't think were taking the chores seriously enough.

Would your cope well with all the politics and trying to rebuild a better society?

We are pretty well stocked as well as land for growing with an abundance of seeds. We have some rather interesting equipment considering where we live. Like a survival boat, people carrying kites and whatnot. Currently filling an armoury. We have pets that can be bred and eaten as well in a shtf type thing. Plenty of birds and squirrels come into the garden too again more meat.

None of us are any needed medications but we do have a good stock of meds too, a huge stock of coffee.

mbosnz · 19/03/2023 18:12

Oh, and the shaking went on for bloody years.

Augustone · 19/03/2023 18:15

The way I am feeling today I don't think I would have any problem being brutal to survive. Middle aged, menopausal, full of rage and ready to take on whoever wants to have a go!

Even on a good day I think I would fight to the end.

Spendonsend · 19/03/2023 18:15

When I go camping I am desperate to get back to somwhere with a shower, toilet and a dry warm bed within about 4 nights so I think i would not survive. I am not skilled or useful in anyway to anyone else.

kavalkada · 19/03/2023 18:17

In case of the total apocalypse I don't know. If I didn't have children, I would probably kill my self.
In case of the ordinary war, I would be fine. I lived through four years of war when I was a teen, constant bombing, no water, no electricity, fear you or somebody you love can die any minute.... That I know I can handle, life just goes on even if you haven't had a bath for a year and the only thing you eat are cans of same food.
The trouble is my kids, I would be terrified for them.

OhmygodDont · 19/03/2023 18:17

I’m also still technically of breedable age and have easy fast labours as well as previously conceiving very fast so in theory I’m also still useful to be kept alive if I was taken.

SnoringPains · 19/03/2023 18:24

I’d fight to survive for my kids for as long as I needed to. If anything happened to them, I would kill myself. I’m a midwife so I guess I might be of use, but again only if my boys are still alive. Currently we live in Scotland and have friends with a remote farm in the highlands so would probably head there and hope to wait it out.

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/03/2023 18:28

I think I’d be pretty fucked, in that I think anyone over 45 would be pretty fucked.

So here’s hoping it doesn’t happen 😁

Absolutely this.

You are filling an armoury? With what - and are you UK??

Roselilly36 · 19/03/2023 18:32

I would fold, DH would be awesome, very strong mentally.

If HRT wasn't available I'd be fucked.

If HRT wasn't available everyone around me would be fucked. Especially if they obstructed my way to a bar of chocolate.

BorgQueen · 19/03/2023 18:33

I’d be fine in an out of the way old pub with open fires and a well in the garden, there’s one a few miles from us that’s been empty for years. Failing that then out in the wilds by a lake with a tent, DH’s van and some camo netting for cover, I’d raid our local makro first - while the idiots were taking tvs, I’d be stocking up on dry goods 😉

Yeah I’m in the U.K.

All perfectly legal hunting tools/weapons for hobbies but in a shtf situation where law is no law would come in pretty handy. All kept secure in bolted gun safes which require two keys to open with separate ammo safes.

Im a prepper to it just makes sense to be able to hunt and kill for food if needed. The children all do target practise and archery for fun too. They can whittle and carve wood and have the appropriate knifes and tools under supervision for such.

We are also campers so have a lot of that equipment too.

Im not a crazy prepper leaving cashes everywhere or with pre-made bug out bags or anything tho lol

Just a weird hobby of buying stuff and learning stuff and whatnot that would end up essential in a shtf situation.

Ive butchered whole pigs for animal feed etc me and dh both first aid trained.

Echobelly · 19/03/2023 18:45

In some ways I'd be pretty rubbish, but I am cool headed in an emergency so that's in my favour. I have very few useful physical skills for a crapsack world, though.

I think I have a small crush on the way you live. My own life is comfortable and suburban but I never forget where I came from so my own children know how to trap/kill/butcher small animals, make fire, identify good forage, build shelter, and do a bit of rough field medic stuff. I also don't have a bug-out bag (somehow that feels like a step too far) but I could put one together in under 3 minutes and I bet you could too 🤣

Dutch1e · 19/03/2023 18:57

I don't know what I'd be like. I have a couple of skills and I'm pretty ruthless when it's needed but I'm also quite clumsy so I can really see myself stumbling into a pit and dying of exposure while the rest of the world gets on with their survival skills.

Fixesplease · 19/03/2023 18:58

Honestly, I'm quite a "handy " person..so could grow/ kill/ butcher my own food.. so reckon I'd be alright.
Violence wise, meh, I'm a middle class lady these days but a brought up in care kid thus could hold my own if it meant defending me and mine. 🤣
My DH however, would be hiding behind me, IT guys are not built for survival. 🤣😂

RealSavage · 19/03/2023 19:02

I would do really well, actually I would go one better and say I'm probably prepared already for it.
A zombie apocalypse would be pretty exciting...shake things up a bit wouldn't it?

Melbourne12 · 19/03/2023 19:03

Dacadactyl · 19/03/2023 18:12

@Melbourne12 @MyCousinsNotVinny didn't tell you the bloody name of it lol! It's called Blackout...the drama documentary one. Filmed Blair Witch style!!

Thanks mate! I’ll pop that into my list for viewing when if my wee one ever goes to sleep tonight. I had googled too but came up with nothing.

Conkersinautumn · 19/03/2023 19:06

I know I can skin and prep a rabbit so that's probably a bonus but I'm older, have a slight mobility issue and people already single me out for abuse so I imagine I'd be killed off very soon by the sort of stronger younger bitter men that would very quickly take control of resources and wouldn't have any motivation to apply empathy or sympathy.

Choconut · 19/03/2023 19:06

This reminds me of The Last Survivors trilogy where an asteroid knocks the moon closer to earth. They're teen books but I really enjoyed them. I'd be crap as I just wouldn't want to live like that, there's so much we take for granted!

Sodullincomparison · 19/03/2023 19:07

ShinyMe · 19/03/2023 17:12

I've been waiting my whole life for a nice apocalypse. I'd be great at it, so long as I have my glasses.

😂😂😂 great comic timing at the end. I burst out laughing.

The book, Blood River, is a description of a journalist travelling along the length of the river Congo. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a country going backwards. There is anarchy and organised society has fallen apart. Many children have never seen a car. It is one of the most dangerous countries in the world.
