To find womens fashion this depressing

Disclaimer, this is partly due to the fact that I'm fat and over 60. But I got all excited about going to John Lewis in Oxford Street, and couldn't find anything I'd want to wear.
So much what I think of as amish clothing - droopy floral, with elasticated sleeves (that look so cheap) or single colour dresses in horrible shades of blue or green.
I used to be able to find stuff I could at least aspire to, but this feels like H and M.
Can anyone recommend clothes shops that sell stylish clothing?

Gudrun Sjoden in Monmouth Street (Seven Dials). Designed for the not-thin. Also, not cheap

cupofteaandabiccyplease · 18/03/2023 17:07

I hate the fact that everyone over 55 is deemed to want to wear big florals, beige, and other dull colours, elasticated waists and sensible shoes😡
I've got bright blue hair, have had for years, I wear dm boots [own various colours] and love funky colours. Love jeans and dislike slogan tshirts with a passion.
[waves to anyone who knows me]😉

I am on my way to gudrun right now...

I live in the sticks. Also over 60, and overweight.

I mostly shop onlibe and/or from catalogues. Today I think I look OK: LandsEnd jeans, Woolovers v-neck sweater over Edinburgh Woollen Mills blouse. (A walk-in impulse buy on a very hot day. I love it!) The last clothes I bought were from Country Collection, but not very exciting. I have a nice Seasalt mac.

Every now and then I feel that someone should start a petition for women who look like us to be better served by clothes shops, and given proper pockets too!

I realise this isn't helpful, but I wanted you to know you are not alone.

Me and Em. There are a few shops in Central London. Pricey but sometimes big discounts in the sales.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 18/03/2023 17:28

I found myself in John Lewis yesterday and it was just appalling. Horrendous ditsy patterns, all the same dress on every stand - literally anything you picked up from any brand could be put back on any other brand.

I ended up in Cos for some blissful dress like an architect vibes.

I'm positive I read on here that John Lewis's head of fashion had declared the death of the midi. She obviously forgot to tell her buyers...

Olinguita · 18/03/2023 17:29

I know what you mean about the Amish look and I agree, it's awful! It baffles me how this trend has endured for so long.
I've bought Boden and Joules tops and sweaters for my mum who is in her 60s recently - quite pricey but they have some non-frumpy and very wearable designs

GoodVibesHere · 18/03/2023 17:35

I like (and need) good quality cotton clothes. There are some good soft bamboo or viscose items here are there too. But the things I like are expensive. I like Thought clothing, Baukjen, People Tree, but I have to wait for a sale as they are ££££. Sometimes find nice trousers in Hush.

Fairislefandango · 18/03/2023 17:36

I'm 51. I went on a clothes shopping trip in a big city for my 50th birthday. Trailed around for hours and found nothing I liked at all. I was about to give up whrn I found a street with Hobbs and The White Company and wanted to buy practically everything in both shops!

Regularsizedrudy · 18/03/2023 17:37

The Amish look is definitely in and I can’t stand it.

I don't know anyone who looks good in it. If any age/size.

It's awful

I couldn't find anything I like

Also no flexibility with trouser lengths in some makes.

Bought trousers recently but they will need shortening but they were expensive so I think they will be returned

Such a shame

For anything other than dresses and shoes, I always scope out the men's departments first. I've got great rain jackets with PLENTY of pockets, inside outside and on the chest (zippy pocket, great for phone and cards), T shirts (I've a long body and don't want the ladies t shirt to end at my navel thanks), Fleece jackets with all the pocket gizmos and often cheaper than the ladies dept. and so on. A bloody revelation!

I get everything else online and go for jazzy colours in Summer, more muted greys green and navy in Winter. I suppose we all have our own styles, and really the only "fancy" stuff I buy now is for a wedding where the same guests are there as the one before! If not, something I have will do.

60+ here too and while ok weight wise, am a bit chunky and long of arm and leg.

I struggle to notice other people';s clothes. What is "the Amish look", can someone post a pic?

Purplepeopleeaterz · 18/03/2023 18:08

I rarely see anyone wearing these styles so begs the question who is buying them?

Imagine a dress that looks like you should be churning butter in a cult on a prairie somewhere.

That's the look.

MissyB1 · 18/03/2023 18:12

I’m 55 and find I have to cast my net very wide to find anything nice these days. Had a couple of good things from Mint Velvet and Phase Eight recently, and randomly a lovely shirt from New Look.

emptythelitterbox · 18/03/2023 18:19

Amish looks good on ages under 10!

Just trying to find a simple blouse to wear under a jacket is a chore.

One that isn't polka dots, headache inducing geometric patterns, giant bows.

V necks that show off my wrinkly neck and decolletage.

Sleeveless that shows off my bingo wings.

Hideous colors like mustard and vomit green.

Kassiopeia · 18/03/2023 18:20

Shop online for 'plus size' specialists, and on e-bay where there ar plenty of stylish clothes in bigger sizes.

lljkk · 18/03/2023 18:22

Plymouth Brethern style?

HarrietSchulenberg · 18/03/2023 18:45

This is precisely why I cannot be bothered buying from clothes shops anymore. I'm 52 and haven't been able to find much that I like (amd can afford) on the high street for over 10 years now. I currently just can't face the endless racks of disgusting nylon dresses that look cheap and wonky but cost an arm and a leg.
I am very lucky to have superb charity shops and a local population that must share my style and get rid of their clothes regularly. I also use eBay, Vinted and Depop to look for things I might like and I joined FB selling groups for brands I like (Seasalt and Gudrun Sjoden are quite good).
In the past I've resorted to making my own dresses from templates made from dresses I love.

Plymouth Brethern style?

I'm from. Plymouth brethren family and we tend to wear separates rather than the Amish style dresses. Denim skirts of a certain length are still a big thing.
The Shirt company have a great and really useful range of shirts.
