Is it weird to refer to Mother’s Day as ‘parent’s day’ in order to be more inclusive?

Just that really, seen it in lots of places, school, church and even on the radio? Am I just being a Luddite sand not rolling with the times including everyone? all Parents and pet parents, And people who want to be parents alike?
Or should we reserve this day only for specifically mothers of children?
yabu- we should be as inclusive as possible to everyone
yanbu- bugger off mellenials, mothers only welcome here!

I haven't seen or heard this anywhere. Got a lot of people riled though. 🙄. They'll be cancelling Christmas and Easter next.

Yes that's definitely going to happen 🙄

My SIL died shortly after the birth of her DD. On Mother’s day the nursery/school always had the card made to her DF. So the child was still making and giving a card. Dad was not offended, and the child was happy to be included.

toomuchlaundry · 18/03/2023 09:32

@Bunnyhascovidnoteggs so my DM can’t celebrate Mother’s Day as she only adopted me and didn’t give birth to me

briecranberry · 18/03/2023 09:32

Surely just scrap the entire lot is just easier then nobody feels left out, hurt, offended, reminded , pressured to have lunch with MIL etc

You want to give your mother some flowers? Do it! Send a card? That would he nice. No need for Moonpig to issue a reminder

There would be approx, 500'fewer threads on Mumsnet each March

limes6 · 18/03/2023 09:33

I've not heard anything about parents day tbh

GarlicGrace · 18/03/2023 09:33

Yes, god forbid we should recognise women (female humans, for the avoidance of doubt) for doing the most essentially female thing there is! Keep up with the times, we never speak of women without a caveat unless the women are actually male. And mother is a very offensive word!

Mother's Day is horrendously non-inclusive. It excludes every male and all the females who, for one reason or another haven't had children. Female people are not allowed to be exclusive: it suggests they might want to keep something for themselves, even if it's only for one day out of 365. Women must Be Kind and expect nothing for themselves, not even words.

People's Day would be better.

hattie43 · 18/03/2023 09:34

It's Mothers Day leave it alone .

We also have Fathers Day or should we now have 2x parents days so neither feels left .

roseopose · 18/03/2023 09:34

My dad died when I was 1 and I always had to make a card for my grandad at school when everyone else was making cards for their dads. It was quite shit, it brought attention to the fact that I didn't have a dad and in primary kids would ask me where he was or why I wasn't making a card for my dad and then talk amongst themselves about it.
However, I wouldn't have felt better necessarily if father's Day had been renamed-there are many days, occasions and societal traditions that remind me I don't have a dad and it is impossible to get away from that. I don't think we can safeguard everyone who has experienced the loss of a parent from feeling that loss by making things like mother's day generic, and personally I find the notion that we can a bit insulting.

DustyLee123 · 18/03/2023 09:34

When my DD was little my DF was asking about grandparents day. I said absolutely not, I’m not doing another present/card buying day to suit the shops and businesses,

YetAnotherSpartacus · 18/03/2023 09:34

If my Dcat wants to get me a card and a present for mothering him then I'm not gonna say he can't

I'm personally hanging out for "Vaguely acknowledge your human slave day". Although knowing what cats think a good present might be I'll skip that bit.

Comedycook · 18/03/2023 09:36

This feels like one of those things which isn't going to happen but it's really good to get people angry....like people who think we aren't allowed to celebrate Christmas anymore and get very angry. It's all woke and political correctness gone mad. Just chill... Christmas and mother's day aren't going to be made illegal.

Spectre8 · 18/03/2023 09:37

Since mothers day has worked into something its not longer originally about, we should scrap all these over commercialised nonsense days, they now only serve to cause drama and discourse if expectations aren't met.

Just appreciate your loved ones everyday instead, absolutely no need to have to pin it all on one day ina year where you can expect appreciation...quite frankly of that is whats happening in your life, poor you!

picklemewalnuts · 18/03/2023 09:38

Mothering Sunday is a great opportunity to work with DC with different life stories about accepting it.

As in, preparation for the day including the opportunity to recognise someone special in your life who does some of the mothering, or to ask a child what they want o do about Mother's Day.

To mention that not everyone can be a mother, and not everyone wants to be a mother.

We don't have to eradicate difference in the name of inclusivity!

DannyZukosSmile · 18/03/2023 09:41

Women are slowly being phased out aren't we? Funny how MEN are not being phased out. Many people say this is a much better time for women compared to 30+ years ago, I think it's worse in many ways. Can't even call yourself a fucking woman these days. Angry

Catapultaway · 18/03/2023 09:41

It's weird to refer to it as anything. Made up nonsense to get people to spend money.
I chose to be a mother, i don't need a day to celebrate or be thanked for my own decisions. The world didn't need another child, I wanted one.

DannyZukosSmile · 18/03/2023 09:41

And NOW we're being told we cannae call ourselves MOTHERS. Kill me now.

Astralitzia · 18/03/2023 09:42

I don't know where you're reading about "parents day", but even the most cursory glance at any advert, seasonal section in shops, social media etc will show you no end of Mother's Day posts and paraphernalia.

Sometimes I think people go looking for things to be outraged by.

Dont be so bloody daft. You can call yourself a woman and a mother to your heart's content and no-one will bat an eyelid. And you know it.

No

Exactly. It's the same kind of dull thinking that got many riled up when they thought the word Easter was removed from Cadburys eggs... Despite the word remaining prominent on the egg.

Mothers of humans only, thanks. Some people's obsession with inclusivity has reached absurd levels.

100% this

I don’t think Parent’s Day is acceptable, but as suggested on another thread about primary schools, Mothers and Others or Special Person Day are kinder for looked after children or those who’ve lost their mum.

I like this idea too.
