To feel a bit shit with the job market

I'm in the process of looking for a new job and the whole thing is really starting to get me down. I've only applied for roles that I have experience in, but there is so much competition nowadays. I had an interview at the beginning of the month, but I was unsuccessful (they didn't let me know until 2 weeks later, after I'd chased them for feedback).

I had another interview on Wednesday, which I thought went really well. The meeting lasted 50 minutes and the conversation just flowed. I did ramble on a bit though (I figure it's better to talk too much than not at all or only provide brief answers). He said he would let me know the outcome by Tuesday. My current job phoned me 3 hours after the interview with an offer so I don't have a good feeling about this one.

I have another next week, so fingers crossed. Third time lucky. It's just becomes so tedious. I've also noticed indeed shows you how many other people have applied for the job which isn't helpful in the slightest 😅. Anyone else in the same boat and starting to feel deflated?

You're only 2 interviews in, and ad you say there's a lot of competition out there. Just keep going, you're getting interviews. Don't be deflated this quickly or you'll never get one!

Not sure what you meant by this part though...

He said he would let me know the outcome by Tuesday. My current job phoned me 3 hours after the interview with an offer so I don't have a good feeling about this one.

If you think a company may interview 5 or 6 people for a role, then on average it will take 5 or 6 interviews for an offer. And that’s only on average - add in things like a bit of luck, that ‘chemistry’ interviewers may be looking for, who you happen to be up against on any given day… you can’t expect immediate results. Plus you’ll be learning from each interview you do. It will happen when the time is right, but you really can’t feel despondent after 2 interviews. Plus you’re getting interviews which is brilliant - getting through the CV sift can be really tricky. Good luck!

The one who said they’d call you on Tuesday probably has another candidate they are interviewing on Monday afternoon / Tuesday, so even if they have decided you’d be amazing, they aren’t going to make an offer until they’ve interviewed all the candidates. For your last job, you may have been the last candidate to be interviewed!

keep going, I’ve always felt that the first couple of interviews back into looking for a job are a write off as you get used to being interviewed again and relax into it, but then when I’ve looked externally for a job, I’ve always aimed to apply for 10+ roles.

I know what you mean @chickentikkacurry For my current role, the agent phoned me while I was still driving home from the (admittedly third ) interview.

The whole process of recruiting is more complicated these days. It is also largely a numbers game. How many applications did you make to secure three interviews? Has everyone you applied to offered an interview ?

The best thing you can do is to stop thinking how hard the market is and start to be genuinely curious about the kind of roles and kind of places where you god work, what you would offer them and what you would expect in return.

Set out to find out how each organisation in the market might measure up, taking every opportunity in interviews and by reading around trade publications and the media generally. The reviews on www.glassdoor.co.uk/index.htm tend to be honest.

This will mean that you widen your search at the same time as narrow your focus. The right job will show up for you. Good luck.
