To wonder if I've done actual damage to my body?

sharronfroot · 17/03/2023 16:44

Completely accept I'll get a barrage of MN judgment for this.

I like a social drink and I've got a pretty high alcohol tolerance. I rarely get bad hangovers or any side effects from drinking. I drink most weekends when I'm out at the pub or at friends' places.

Recently I went to a friend's house party and the alcohol was flowing. I drank more than I've had in years, to the point I was sick and felt unwell for the entire next day.

Since then, I've felt dreadful every time I drink.

I'm not talking about being psychologically put off of alcohol because of the memory of that night. I'm not put off at the thought of it at all.

I'm talking about literally having a couple of drinks and feeling overwhelming nauseous after and absolutely awful the next day, despite it being far less that I'd have drunk in the past.

At one point I thought I might be pregnant (i'm not!) because it was so persistent.

This has happened a few times in a row now and I'm wondering if that heavy boozy night has someone damaged my insides, and if so, how!?!

I did try to google (I even tried that AI chatbot thing!) and couldn't get an answer.

(And yes, of course I know that the answer is that I shouldn't drink alcohol again...but that's not the question I'm asking!)

It sounds as though your liver is overwhelmed. But then that's hardly unexpected so what are you after?

Maybe you could try a complete holiday from alcohol for a few weeks to give your liver a chance to fully recover, and then see how you go with moderate drinking after that.

The liver is very resilient but it does need time to repair itself. If you are worried, you could get liver function bloods done at the GP (or pay to have them done online if you don't want to see your GP about it)

DaveyJonesLocker · 17/03/2023 16:49

Yeah I'd say liver damage, I'd see your gp and don't hold back about the drinking or they won't know what to look for.

AndTheSurveySays · 17/03/2023 16:55

You need to give your liver a rest.

Are the corners of your eyes yellow at all?

Redebs · 17/03/2023 17:13

Get along to your GP. Issues with the liver can be investigated with blood tests.
Livers are possible to repair, but you need to know what's going on so you can get the right treatment.

WonderingWanda · 17/03/2023 17:13

If you make yourself that sick, the kind where you can't even keep water down it's alcohol poisoning and now your body is recognising it as a poison. Give the booze a break, let your liver recover and then keep it in moderation.

whyhere · 18/03/2023 08:32

This needs medical intervention.

CampervanKween · 18/03/2023 08:42

Milk thistle is supposed to help the liver repair itself so maybe get a tincture from Holland and Barrett and see if that helps?

twitterexile · 18/03/2023 08:44

Stop drinking FGS. I suspect your body is trying to tell you something.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 18/03/2023 08:47

Why are you still drinking when it makes you so unwell?

You need to see a doctor as I suspect you've given yourself liver damage.

Mercurial123 · 18/03/2023 08:50

You're coming across as very defensive OP. Your body is telling you to take it easy. You'd be foolish to ignore.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/03/2023 08:54

You can ask your GP to order liver function tests, but basically I think you have got to the age where you need to cut WAY back on drinking. You just can't process alcohol the same way, so instead of wondering when you can get back to the regular drinking, you need to be rethinking the weekend fun tbh.

MeinKraft · 18/03/2023 08:54

Do you get heartburn or pain at any other times? Gastritis can be caused by drinking.

Nap1983 · 18/03/2023 08:57

What age are you? I used to be able to go out for days in a row, drink and get up for work no hangover. Now… absolutely not I’m dying after a proper night out and would feel a bit rotten in morning even after a few.

ShimmeringShirts · 18/03/2023 09:13

It’s completely possible you’ve done damage to your body with long term heavy drinking yes, but none of us can tell you whether you actually have or not. Only a doctor can.

ScotchOnTheRocksWithATwist · 18/03/2023 09:14

I've been through the same some years ago. It got to the point where I'd throw up after just a few sips. You need to take a step back from the booze and give your body a break.

purpledalmation · 18/03/2023 09:36

Your GP could run some liver and pancreas functioning blood tests. Maybe a scan for fatty liver?

Tellyaddict123 · 18/03/2023 09:42

Yeah another vote for potential liver issues or allergy. Sometimes after an illness it can kick off an allergy / intolerance. It could be you’re having an intolerance reaction. If your liver tests come back normal I would check if it’s all alcohol. I can’t drink beer or wine but can have a few spirits.

PylaSheight · 18/03/2023 09:54

Alcohol irritates the lining of the stomach so could be alcoholic gastritis perhaps?
Do you get sick with anything other that booze?

VaddaABeetch · 18/03/2023 10:04

Not getting hangovers is not a good sign.

Why don’t you stop for a few months.

MadeForThis · 18/03/2023 10:16

You need to stop drinking. At least for a few months. And get a GP appointment.

BellePeppa · 18/03/2023 10:21

Not having hangovers etc is actually a really bad thing. They’re there to help regulate your drinking. My ex never had hangovers (he was proud of that). Shame really as it might have stopped him becoming an alcoholic (thankfully now longtime recovery). Best to get yourself checked out and rethink your drinking consumption.
