Animal Farming

So Spain is starting octopus farming for human consumption. Scientists have voiced concerns about the cruelty involved in keeping intelligent and sentient creatures in unnatural and stressful conditions and by the inhumane method of slaughter.

I'm against exploitation in any form, of any living creature, of any species.

It makes me feel enormously sad that we use and abuse our fellow creatures for our own gratification because they are easy to exploit and they can't complain in a way we can comprehend. They make easy targets for making money from - they're powerless and no one is standing up for them.

Where on earth will this end?

I agree but I guess because they're not cute and fluffy some won't bother.

MMoon23 · 16/03/2023 19:18

Totally agree with you in every way.
The scale of this cruelty is so hard to comprehend, it makes this world so hard to live in :(

Cherrysherbet · 16/03/2023 19:21

100% agree

Suzi888 · 16/03/2023 19:21

33% YABU- Shame on you.
Humans are selfish, cruel bastards and we will destroy our planet with our endless consumption.

Completely agree OP, I won’t be eating them.

BillyNoM8s · 16/03/2023 19:26

One can only hope for an octopus uprising. They're smart enough.

Humans are horrible.

I used to know a "vegetarian" who ate fish, "because fish aren't cute". Not a fucking vegetarian then are you, you knob?

I feel awful for the so so many chickens, cows and sheep also. Horrible lives they lead.

Singularity82 · 16/03/2023 19:28

Excuse my ignorance, but is this any more cruel than farming chickens/pigs/cattle?
if so, for what reason?
Genuinely trying to learn, as agree or not, there isn’t this backlash from scientists when it comes to standard farming, is there?
Thanks

cows are 'cute and fluffy' we still exploit them for milk and meat (and gelatine, leather, soap...)

as long as there is a need/want for cheap animal products there will be factory farming.

Wild octopuses have a pretty stressful & difficult life, not least because they are intelligent. They basically grow (unless they get eaten) until they are ready to breed then their body shuts down & they starve to death right. Many only live to 2 years old anyway. If they can be provided with a good amount of stimulation in captivity, I'd think it was a very good deal for them.
