Cost of hotels in London is ridiculous!

I appreciate that costs are going up across the board, but…. Just in the process of booking a weekend stay for me, dh and our youngest dc in London in April. I’ve looked at Booking.com as well as various well-known chains which I stay at fairly frequently.

The price per night for a twin-queen room in most decent looking hotels in the area we need to stay is at least £500 and many are much more! Some really pretty ordinary 4 star hotels charging £800 a night… this is about twice what they cost pre-covid.

Similar hotels in other European capitals or Los Angeles, Sydney etc are much cheaper. What’s going on??

Thanks all for the suggestions, I managed to find a family room at a Park Plaza for 360ish a night which suddenly seems like a bargain đŸ˜‚

We had 3 nights in the Premier Inn Hub on St Martins Lane last month and it cist about £500 for the 3 nights including 6 breakfasts. Tiny rooms, but large comfy bed, only continental breakfast but only £5 each, but right in the middle of Covent Gdn, Leicester Sq etc. We loved it and would use it again for theatre trips. We have also used the Premier Inn at the Angel, which was a little cheaper, but larger room but a bit further out. The Angel has loads of bars and restaurants plus a street market, so a good venue if you are not wanting to spend all your time in the west end. We have paid a lot of money in the past for airbnbs and independent hotels which have been terrible, so stick to the chains now.

It would be interesting to see if this is related to Brexit, in terms of hotels struggling with staffing?

Brexit promised higher wages for the UK, but combined with other factors we know that this will increase prices.

Have staff in these chains had a significant pay rise?
